Hello. I have a 10D and love it. I've been thinking up starting the process of upgrading to L series lenses, but I'm wondering if it would make more sense to upgrade to the 20D first? Do you think I would get better pixs by getting the L series lens and use the 10D or use my current lenses (28-135 IS)and upgrade to the 20D.
Thanks for your opinions.

Get the lens, you can always switch bodies later, but the lenses will last longer....

If the speed of the 10D is not causing you problems, or the high ISO noise, then upgrading to a 20D will not buy you much, and upgrading yours lenses will definitely make a bigger difference.

IMHO, you will notice a bigger difference if you get the 70-200L. When I got that lens for my DRebel, the results were just amazing....

the lens will be a good investment.
if the 10D is still good enough for you then get the glass!

Remember that in a camera and lens combination it's the lens that captures the image, the camera 'merely' records it, i.e. the lens is the most important of the two. So go for the best lens you can.

Lens! You'll continue to love it for years to come.
If you buy a 20D you'll love it as much as you use to love your 10D, then something else will come out, and you'll be here again...still without the lens.

Definitely get the glass first. Cameras keep getting better and cheaper very rapidly. So, by the time you finally find that the 10D no longer is sufficient for you, there will be a camera that is better than the 20D for the same price or less. And you will have taken lots of great pictures with your L lens in the mean time.

My feeling is to get a camera body that will do the job - and your 10D will do that - and then put as much money into the lenses as you can. A 20D in three years will go used for about $800 (in 2005 dollars). A 70-200 f2.8 will be worth what you pay for it in 2005 dollars. You invest in a lens while you are more or less renting a camera.

If there is any doubt left. A good lens will do WAY more for your picture quality than the upgrade to a 20D. Though I don't have a 1DS, I am guessing that even that camera couldn't do as much for your picture quality as upgrading from the 28-135 to something like the 24-70L.
Don't get mad 1DS owners. I only think I'm right.

I used to own a 10D and I now have a 20D. That being said, the only reason I switched was the insurance company said "would you like a 10D or a 20D" when my 10D got stolen. GET THE LENS!!!

I love the 20D but in your case I think the advice to get the lens is good.

I was in exactly the same position a couple of months ago, and decided to keep the 10D and add the 70-200 f4. My logic was that after 18 months I had yet to fully realise the potential of the camera, and the lens would help me do that.

I think this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=60986) should convince you of getting the best lenses you can afford before changing bodies.

I'll join the chorus. If you're not pushing the 10D's limits and are pushing your lens collection's limits, upgrade where it counts - the lenses. If you needed the bigger/faster buffer or the better noise reduction or something else that the 20D has over the 10D, it'd be different, but since you like the 10D, get the glass.

Go for the L. It will still be in your bag when the 60D is out.
