Im new to photography so bear with me. Im having issues with taking manual shots with a G9 that come out with better quality than the auto setting. Im shooting in raw and I have a tripod. any tips on improving my shooting. Just practice with messing around with apeture and ISO settings? Another possibility could be my computer's pixel capability. Just need some insight.

Hello maxwell;

First off - welcome to POTN... Enjoy your stay here; there's a great deal of expertise to be found... The G9 is a GREAT camera, and is capable of outstanding results...

Now the bad news... your question is just way too wide to answer, and you don't say what problems you're seeing!

You don't say how experienced or knowledgeable you are, and without some sample images, it's very difficult to identify what you might have done (wrong?) vs. what you should be doing (right!)!

First of all - you should concentrate on understanding the relationship between ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture to obtain your desired result. They all inter-relate, and all play a part in your set-up...

Then you need to decide what "feel" you want for your image... Sharp with lots of Depth of Field, or "soft" with Shallow Depth of Field etc... then apply the appropriate settings.

Read the manual, read it again, and then read it again - always with the camera by your side. You'll be surprised at just how much information you pick up on the second and third passes once you have the basics put to bed...

Hope that's helped... Come on back if you have more specific questions...

Cheers;

Lee

Something else to bear in mind .... The JPGs that come out of the camera have been processed by the camera to enhance/increase saturation, contrast, etc. The RAW files don't have that. It is assumed that when the photographer is shooting RAW that he/she will be processing them to his/her standards. Your issue may be that you haven't done an adequate job processing?

I believe your camera came with the Canon software "Digital Photo Professional" which is a RAW processor and converter. You can use it to adjust color balance and temperature, contrast, exposure, color saturation and sharpness. Then it will convert the RAW to either TIFF or JPEG and save it. It does an excellent job, and Canon posts free updates on their website.

DPP (regrettably) doesn't support the G9... but ZoomBrowser does (which also comes free of course)!
