Well, I have the L version for a couple of weeks now and I absolutely love it.
With 5.6 it's not fast - yet fast enough for some 200mpH stuff.
AF is slow but accurate, just late 80's early 90's technology.
Not truly a macro, but see for yourself. I will buy a 70-200 f/4L soon but I won't sell the 100-300 ever.

I will post a link to a gallery in the next couple of days.

Did you use extension tubes or crop for any of the bug shots?

No, that lens has a macro setting. No tubes.
Only Pic #2 from post #20 (BMW with flames) was cropped.

Try using a photo sharing site (flickr, photobucket, smugmug, etc.) and then importing the image. Just open the image on the site and copy and paste the code. Should look something like this.

[IMG]http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk2/D40riggs/Street%20Photography/parkfountain.jpg[/IMG

*there is a ] at the end as well, I just took it off so you could see the code without the image popping up.

Good idea!. This is what I did in the post above. However, the picture above is gone now. Either due to the fact that the picture at it's origin is gone or the POTN server maintains (clears) posts...

I am curious about this lens. It's autofocus is ancient, but I don't have much money and from the reviews that I've read the image quality is great. It seems to compare IQ wise to the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS. Sure, it's probably a lot worse overall, but if I can pick one up for real cheap....More pictures and thoughts on the lens please.

I have not really looked at pics from the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS yet. The advantage of that lens is the IS and USM. However, the Fred Miranda index is a mere 6.5...
Even though the older lenses are not listed there and this thread is about an L lens, the IQ is way better. Personally I would rate it with 8.5.

The only source I know of is at www.keh.com (http://www.keh.com).
They even have the almost identical 50-200 f/3.5-4.5 L and the 80-200 f/2.8 L in their inventory.

I am in the process of building galleries on pbase and will post the link here soon.

I hear ya, but I had competing forces in my life at the time. The f5.6 was simply not fast enough for my son's night time high school football (I was amazed at how poorly lit most of these fields really are, but I digress.). So, I got a 70-200 f2.8L IS. Still wasn't ideal, given said poorly lit fields, but for that purpose it was much better. Mix in a spouse that said I shouldn't have both, and well... you get the idea.

Fast forward to today, my son has long since graduated, I have since traded the 70-200 for a 100-400, and I still would rather have my old 100-300. :(

I never really did like the 70-200. I'm sure I'm the only one, but I suspect that is partly due to me blaming it for getting rid of the 100-300 when I really didn't want to.

 it's crazy how OEM pads get the wheels dirty after a 5min drive. I now have Ceramic pads up front and OEM at the back, with this the back wheels get dirty/dusty before the fronts.

I always wondered why that happened. It's one of those things where once you notice it, you always notice it. Like how Mustang convertible owners always drive around with their tops down and their little back windows up. Like two little shark fins.

Watch, now that I said that, you're going to see it all the time. :)

I got mine in August 1989, 21 years ago. I received it as a gift from my grandparents and parents. First location I went to was Big Bend National Park. I used this lens a lot until my old Canon 620 body broke down in about 1999. I didn't pick up another camera until I bought a Canon T2I a few weeks ago. This lens hasn't lost a THING!

Copy and paste something like this:

But remove the blank between img and the right bracket. Also, make sure that your flickr photo is not protected.

I would have to agree with Chris on that one. AF is slow and the motor noise can draw some weird looks from 70-200 users. ;)

That being said, It's small, light, and the push/pull zooming is much faster.

I've had a 100-300 f5.6 since about 1989. After lending it to my brother is the tropics it came back all mouldy. So I bought an L version about a week ago. I gave it a whirl with some Nikon diopters last weekend and this weekend at the model boat club.

Thank you. I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with this lens in terms of raw IQ. Is anyone else using this guy on FF, because it seems to work great on my 5d classic. Sharp and very contrasty imo all the way to 300mm. I don't have anything in the focal length to compare it to, though...

the sales volume is too small to gauge the price. that said, probably 350-400 is a fair price

Picked up a solid one with a small scratch on the corner of the front element for 40 bucks. picture quality unaffected. I'm pretty happy...
