We need a section based around computers since they are a popular topic but that's not what this is about.

I have the little yellow shield saying there are updates to be installed. Problem is when I do and I restart my computer explorer doesn't work. Not IE but I can't right click, no taskbar, nothing. I can only move my mouse and see my background. I've looked for programs that might cause this but I can't seem to find anything. I've used system restore and it work before I install the updates. Any advice?

I haven't reinstalled Ad-Aware or one of several virus programs I have somewhere on my external HDD since I reinstalled everything on my computer. It wasn't that long ago either so it sucks to have a new problem. So yes, any help? Thanks!

You mean this section? :D

Do you get any errors when windows boots up?

Try running Explorer manually by using the "Run" command with "explorer.exe" as the command, see what happens.

Also, try looking at the Event Viewer to see if there's any problems highlighted (in your Start Menu, go to "Administrative Tools", and then "Event Viewer")

Also, which updates did you install? Go to Windows Update and select "Review your update History" and check out the last update downloaded. Google the KB number and see if there's any related issues.

(a) If this is a fairly recent installation; and
(b) if you didn't have any antivirus software installed; AND
(c) if system restore doesn't seem to solve the problem.

....then I'd probably try System Restore one more time, and see what downloading the updates did to my system a second time. If you still get the same problem as before...

....then I personally would *strongly consider* just reinstalling Windows again, and make sure that I installed Avira Antivir (http://www.free-av.com/) (free) right away, along with Microsoft Defender (also free). Only because I know it would (or should!) solve my problem and presumably I wouldn't have very much (if any) to backup/reinstall.

You could try installing those now and running them to see if anything turns up. You could also use something like Panda Security's free online antivirus check (http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/). But I'm not exactly sure it's virus causing your problem.
