Hi I am shooting the fetish ball fashion show saturday and need a faster lens. My 28-135 is going to be too slow I think. I have a 420ex flash but have not gotten good result with it during fast paced performances. Is there a way I can set this to only fill flash?
I was thinking of renting a lens at Calumet. They have the 28-70 f/28 or the 70-200 f/2.8. I am not sure yet how far away the stage is or where I will be allowed to stand. I plan on shooting in RAW in case i need to make adjustment. The garments will need to be show in entirety and they will mostly consit of vinyl or rubber.

Thanks Ruby

a lot depends on how close you can get to the stage and how much light there is. Fashion shows are usually poorly lit, so you might wanna considder something like an 85mm 1.8. Keep in mind, that you need a pretty fast shutter speed to freeze the motion.
Yes, a flash can help quite a bit. If you wanna use ambient light and your 420 as fill flash, just set the FEC to -1 or so.
Good luck!

You can fill flash, but I think you want to freeze the model instead.

With fill flash, you get a freeze, but you will get a "ghost" if the shutter is still open, when the model moves.

My recommendation, fast lens, HIGH ISO, and off-camera flash.

You could go for the cheap 50mm F1.8 too. It's not very fast to focus though, so you might have to take the photo when they're standing still.

RUN and get an 85mm f/1.8! ;)

If you HAVE to have a zoom ,. then your f/2.8s are the only choices.
As you mention ,. it's the 24-70mm and 70-200mm in f/2.8

If they are too pricey look to the 3rd party alternatives,. Tamron 28-75mm XRDI and Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX HSM

But you'll do better with the 85mm f/1.8 and a 135mm f/2L

Thanks, They have a 85 mm f 1.2 USM lens which is affordable to rent. The only L lens are 300 and 400 and cost quite a bit. I will most likely set the lens wide open and shoot in Apture priorty mode.

85mm f/1.2L? ... the focus on that lens is nowhere near fast enough for a fashion show... unless you're talking about the 85mm f/1.8 -> much faster focusing.

Have a read of this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=60913&page=1), and other threads with the name "concert" in them, they'll give you some good tips. I forget exactly which thread it was, but someone recommended shooting in Tv mode and RAW, setting the time to 1/160th I think, and worrying about any underexposure in post processing.

Could be fast enough if you keep the focus on nearby ballpark which means manual aid to get to range and always check that you are in correct range before hitting AI servo. If the 85/1.2 is close it is pretty fast to focus.

Hmm what about a 35 1:2 I know it's not the best but I do have it in my bag. Anyone have any luck when they were starting out with this lens?

I am not sure if it's allowed. I thought the board did not for some strange reason allow nudity.

If you are so inclined here is a link to some shots I did for her before....

Warning some nudity*
by clicking on the link you agree that you are over 18 (at least in america where they are a bit prudish about such things)

These were done with my 28-135 IS lens and are not all that great. I am hoping to get much better ones this time.
