Shooting with a battery grip

I love my battery grip (BG-E2N) for my 40D when shooting portrait sports pictures, but I'm having a hard time using the "AF-ON". I shoot in Al Servo mode and use the custom fuction "Metering start/Meter+AF start" when I'm shooting basketball, but I haven't figured out how to hold the grip and press the "AF-On: button.

TheHoff, on the 40D and 50D, there is an "af on" button distinct from the "*" button.

However, for some reason, the "af on" button is only found on the body, and isn't on the BG-E2N making it pretty awkward to use the "af on" button in vertical position. I don't think the camera allows you to assign the "*" button to autofocusing either (though, I'm not 100% sure. I don't own either), but I think you're stuck with the "af on" button.

Custom function IV - 2 lets you switch the functions of these two buttons - at least on the 40D. If the grip has a * button (I don't own a grip yet), this should work. The downside is that if you use the AF-ON button in landscape orientation, like I do, you might find the * button awkward. Worth it, I suppose.
