In another forum I'm a member of, MacRumors.com, there is a feature called Forum Spy. It acts like New Posts, except it's live. It's a feature those on the MR forums seem to love.
Here are some links relating to Forum Spy;
spy.macrumors.com (http://spy.macrumors.com/)
Forum Spy on MR Introduction Thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=230356)
Forum Spy Implementation in other forums (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=573071)
If it were implemented in POTN, would you use it?
Cheers,
LNL

Who pays for the extra load on the servers this will cause ?
One thing is that users manually hit new posts many times another is to have a javascript poll the database constantly for new posts. That is going to put alot of extra load on the server.

I did wonder about that. Is there a subscription/donation service for POTN?

Hi Tommy
There is a smarter way to design a Spy rather than querying for each user each time -- a quick google showed one of the vB plugins does it the right way
I created a forum spy using sajax. It caches the results every 10 seconds using crontab (for better performance, instead of running a query for each user)
Of course since I don't think Pekka installs 3rd party additions, the OP is out of luck anyway.

Yes that is of course better.

Yep ;) If Pekka wants something like this he will most likely code it himself to ensure security is in order.

Basically, instead of users hitting the "New Posts" button repeatedly to get a live update of recent posts, this feature allowed them to sit in front of the screen and just look at the screen refreshing periodically.

Cool? Yes, Practical? No
1. Would the amount of people using it justify creating it?
2. How many more PM's are the moderators going to get with questions from people confused about what it is and what is going on? (not to mention cluttering the forum with posts from confused people that dont know how to PM the mods)
3. Couldent better things be done to improve the forum? If this is put in place it will require the server to run more data and then additions to the forum in the future will be much more strict due to not wanting to put more of a data load to the foum.

Calling it "cool" is too much credit. It's a boring waste. How blah...

I take it you're not a supporter of it then
It's all opinion. I reckon it works on the MR Forums. It would rape the servers, though.

I'd hate for the site to refresh automagically, unless there would still be a New Posts page in addition. I don't want to be playing Whack-A-Mole (http://www.addictinggames.com/whackamole.html) with thread titles. I like to view and reply to threads on my own terms.

I've been busy sorting out stuff for work and school.
Give me time, I'll be addicted to POTN soon. I just need my L back from Canon Repairs, and a faster ISP to upload pics. Its the summer holidays now; i'll be snapping ducks all day!
