they show as .mts which i know is mpeg-4. why cant i just play them? ive searched around and it sounds like alot of rig-a-moroll
just tp play the file. i can play it in the camcorder..i can play to the tv. i cant play it in my pc so therefore no editing. is this just a codec problem? the file icon is one of thos 'unknown file' icons.
i have found vlc views it..but there is no saving or editing. ive read great things about this cam but i cant solve this problem. my computer is a quad core new this year.

you can play it with the vlc media player.

editing it is another story... go over to dvinfo.net and take a look at the avchd forum, there are some great threads on editing and burning software for avchd.

thank you. i did manage to get vlc to play them..but saving and converting to something common seems to be a problem.

ok so i am able to convert them now after hours of looking for converter prog. vlc doesnt want to do it..unless it was a fxp mode.
so now i am able to capture, view, convert and edit. wish i would have read more about the files before i bought this...not for the average user. but it will be fun! now that i can begin..

Hey prwhite55
I just got this camcorder also. How did you go about capturing, viewing, and converting?
I do Visual Effects and I would really love to use my new camera for short films and such.
Thanks so much!

hi there..i am NOT a pro..im really an avid still photographer with many canon cameras, thats why i chose the canon hd camcorder and i read alot. i was miffed about the files. but thats my own fault for not investigating. but i am happy about the quality!

i got avs video converter. it views and converts. vlc was still a bit choppy even tho i have a quad core pc. i prefer to edit in windows movie maker altho i just aquired adobe premeire and need to learn. wmm doesnt view the mpegs from avs..so i go to avi/wmv just for that. also got a 1tb extra ext drive cus these files are huge.

The files might be a little of a hassle but nobody should put this little beauty aside because of this ! Now let's just face it, if you go HD ... best is to go Blu Ray anyway. These files are a Sony standard, and will play fine when burned on BD discs and played on BD players. Now as far as editing goes ....

Limited stuff can be done with the software you got with the cam. That's the Pixela software.
Then I wanted to put some stuff on facebook and youtube. Just for fun, I know quality and such are lost, it's just to share some clips of my youngest. And couldn't find anything that would convert the stuff, or let me do something more, until, until, ..
It might be hard to believe, but Windows Moviemaker does a nice job .... YES if you have installed the CD's that you get with the Camcorder Windows moviemaker will open the MTS and M2TS files, even if it doesn't show any previews or marks the files as unknown !
I looked for compatibility in the adobe creative suits ... it might work with CS4 but NOT in CS3.

Found some good info here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.m2ts (wiki where else ;))

Hope this helps you out !

P.S.
These are my opinions and findings, they should be regarded as such, I am in no way a professional, I have a DSLR and a HD Camcorder to mess around with for fun.

I view the files using windows media player classic, using the Core avc codec wich works great! No choppyness whatsoever on the video. To edit the avchd files I use Sony Vegas and Pinnacle studio 12. They both support the avchd files right off the camera so there is no need to convert them before doing any editing.

It's a wonderful camera.
