At very late notice (tomorrow morning) I have been asked to cover a cycle race in an indoor velodrome. The question I have is about white balance. Should I just shoot auto WB or try and set it. I do not, or want to shoot in RAW. I am not sure what type of lighting is used in this type of venue. Thanks.

If you have a grey/white card, you could set white balance manually. You could get pretty close by just bringing a white sheet of paper and setting custom WB off that.

Check the manual for instructions on how to set custom WB.

Until now I never had chance to use camera which would make proper white balance when set on auto and shoot under lights. So keep white paper with you (start list of race is normally printed on white paper, and it works just fine) and set custom white balance. If velodrome has windows, and therefore outside light comes in (at least part of it), repeat this from time to time, since outside light might change. Even though major light is artificial light of velodrome, outside light is enough to give you a bit off color cast.
