Are you using a card reader? Are you shooting RAW only or RAWw/a jpg?

No I don't have a card reader yet. I'm shooting Raw plus large jpeg.

Most important is to get a card reader. What happens when you attach your camera to your computer? Does the computer recognize the camera as a drive?

If you use the cam as a drive to transfer images, be sure that the battery has a good charge. You could lose your images if the transfer is interrupted.

Yuck that would suck!

Did you install the CD that was in the black folded paper-like container/wrapper? Thats is what allows you to view and convert RAW to Tiff/Jpeg.

Yes, I installed the Digital photo professional. My camera comes doesn't come up as a drive letter.

I assume you are running windows, what do you see when you look at "My Computer" with the camera hooked to the computer?

If you're using EVU, does the camera show up in it? If it doesn't, check the Menu on the camera and make sure "Communication" is set to "Normal".

Also, make sure that you have a spare drive letter.

My work laptop uses all available drive letters so I find that my F: drive becomes re-mapped to EOS_DIGITAL when I plug in the camera. If you have loads of mapped drive letters, click on each on and see if DCIM comes up.

Oh, do you have a plug-and-play compatible version of windows? If not, you may have to "install the device" seperately, but USB should be plug and play I would have thought.

When I go to my computer I see an icon for my camera and it is called EOS 20D.

I'm running XP Pro SP2.

I have plenty of drive letters.

Then the computer's recognizing the camera.

if you click on the icon does it bring up a list of files? If it does you can copy them to a folder then open them with the software that came with your 20 D.

It opens up the folder with the jpegs in it. I only see the jpegs. I then set the camera to nothing but RAW and nothing appears then. Although I do remember that in the documentation that in explorer you won't see RAW files only JPEG. That is why i'm trying to figure out to how to use the software that came with the camera to view the RAW photos.

I wouldn't think that would happen unless you're moving them instead of copying them and even then it would be a long shot. A good idea would be to wait until the images are safely on your computer before deleting them from the card whether you go directly from the camera or use a card reader.

The folder should have the RAW files in it. If there are no files with t CR2 extension something is wrong. Dumb question...........on the menu on your camera are you selection raw with jpg or just jpg? Hve you tried raw only?

Hve you tried raw only?

Someone also suggested this in another post last night and I didn't have time to try it, but you might want to. Since I have a card reader, I haven't been in too much of a rush to figure it out.

Now if I could only get the card reader to delete the images without timing out! :) Another not too important issue as I can always delete them when I put it back in the camera.

And does the camera show up in EVU (EOS Viewer Utility) when you run that? It realy helps us answer you if you answer all our questions. They're designed to narrow down the possible problem areas.

Jon, in EVU it has the camera as an option and I can drill down into the folders and see the RAW image. So what do I do with the image to the image so that I can open it up in photoshop?

Thanks for your help and sorry I didn't answer everything.

OK, so you can move your RAW files off the camera using EVU. Digital Photo Pro, which also came with the 20D, will let you convert RAW to JPEG or TIFF.

Opening in PhotoShop is a new question. Are you using PhotoShop CS, PhotoShop 7, or PhotoShop Elements? IIRC there's a patch/update to CS to support 20D RAW files. I think the other two need outside conversion, but I mostly use Paint Shop Pro.

You can use the same PS CS plug in for 20D Raw in Photoshop Elements 3.

That is what I'm trying to figure out how to do! I can't figure out how to convert the RAW image to anything. I don't have hardly anything options available to me once i select the image.

If you have the file (picture) opened as a raw file you can click on "save as" there will be some choices there such as .tif or .jpg

Chris, open the raw in the File Viewer Utility, then work there yor levels (play a lot, that way you are gonna get familiar with the program) and then, when you are saving the image, it is an opction where it says convert to jpg, click on that one and then you will be able to open your jpg in PS.

I hope it works for u ;)

If the 20D provides files as the 300D does (which I'm using as an example), the files should be in (Drive letter):\DCIM\100CANON, which might be why you can't find them by clicking on the drive letter. You might also have folders for 200CANON, etc. if you've removed the card or battery while shooting, a new numbering might start depending on how your cam is set-up. If you're shooting raw with jpg, files you are looking for should be something like CRW_0003.CRW & CRW_0003.THM which represent the RAW file & JPG with the EXIF info.
re: "it is an opction where it says convert to jpg, click on that one and then you will be able to open your jpg in PS." If you're going to do editing & saving, and possibly editing & saving again , I recommend saving as a .tiff As you learn more about PS, you will probably want to return to a pic & re-edit. TIF will keep most of the pic info intact, where jpg will discard info every time you save in that format.
