I'm looking into buying a Rebel XS and this will be my 1st SLR. I'm coming from a Canon SD750 so this is going to be a big jump for me! The SD750 is a good camera but I just want to be operating on a higher level. I LOVE macro photos and im just curious if anyone would be kind enough to post some macros with the "kit" lens that comes with the camera. After buying this camera I wont be able to get a lens right away. This is a big purchase for me so the stock lens will have to do for a little while.
Thanks in advance!!

I wouldnt count on any macro using the kit lens. DSLR dont have a macro mode, instead some lens happen to have a higher magnification rate at minimum focus distance, which lends very well to macro.
Also by nature of how a P&S works, F/2.8 on your old camera (if it went that big) has much more DOF than F/2.8 on a DSLR. I dont know the exact amounts, but F/2.8 on a PS camera would have DOF equivilant of F/5.6 or even F/8.
To get started on macro a set of extention tubes would help until you can afford a dedicated macro lens, just dont forget that your going to want a flash as well in time as shooting at F/8+ can be hard to hand hold.

You can't really take macros with the kit lens as is - just closeups, but you can if you get a body reversing coupler for it and use the lens backwards. see http://www.flickr.com/groups/macroviewers/discuss/72157594536861701/ for a couple of example pics

Get the XSi instead, big difference in features that you will use for macro.

Which features do you speak of?

higher megapixel, two more AF points, spot metering, bigger LCD, slightly faster burst shooting...
From what I have read, those are the main advantages XSi has over the XS...which of those will make a big difference?

Megapixels are overrated IMO. There is a reason people buy "true" macro lenses instead of simply cropping their shots. It is conventional to focus manually when shooting macro (I am yet to take an AF macro shot in the 2.5 weeks I've had my lens), so AF points are not as crucial. Since most macro shots are done with a flash and in full manual, I don't see much use for spot metering. LCD is a matter of opinion, I wouldn't mind to have a bigger LCD, but I only use it to see if I got the general composition right and to set the settings. Burst shooting would be useful if trying to catch moving subjects. The faster RAW fps of XSi over XS is definitely a plus, but it wouldn't be crucial for me.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not simply defending my purchase. If you have the money to get the XSi, absolutely do so. But if budget is a concern, XS does a great job in all areas of photography. I own a 1:1 macro lens, and I am yet to desire something my camera does not have. My limit right now is my skill :)
