Hi
I'm going to buy a 70-200 F4L soon and I was wondering if a 1.4x extender would be adviseable for this lens if I want a bit more than 200mm...
Has anyone tried this before? What can you tell me about it? Post some examples please :)
Thanks in advance :D

Found the 1.4x group on flickr, and a few people had examples posted with the 70-200mm f/4L using the extender. You lose a stop (which I'm sure you already know), and it's a small loss in quality, but it looks like it's still acceptable.

Just don't try for the 2x because your 400D won't autofocus.

that combo should work well for you. The only time you may have trouble is late evening low light shots.

Here's a couple of shots with a 5D and 30D, 70-200 f4 (non IS) and the 1.4x. It worked for me (I'm selling the f4 since I upgraded to a 2.8) fine. Focus did slow down a little, but not as much as having the 300 f4 on the 30D. IQ is pretty good even wide open.

If you do encounter loss of quality then stop down to about 7.1 or f8 and you should get the prime results out of the 70-200 + 1.4 x extender

What is the point for getting 1.4 and not 2x converter? Does it reduces the IQ substantially? with 1.4 you'll get 98 - 280 mm, but with 2x you'll get 140-400mm. am I wrong?

2x IQ is substantially reduced, and it won't AF on anything less than a 1D

IF you had the 70-200 f/2.8, then you could use it. It works fairly well, but I think you need to use f/11 (effective) to keep things reasonably sharp.
