Besides the focal point, what are the difference between these? I have a chance to get the 28-70 for $850 and want to get some opinions before I do so.
Thanks!

Wait, are these both Canon? Or who? Canon doesn't currently make a 28-70, so I have to assume you're either talking used (condition?) or someone else's lens.

Correct, its a used 28-70 by Canon.
I only use Canon lenses. :)

I've been looking at both lenses recently, hoping for a good price on a used (discontinued) 28-70. As usual, I'm frustrated by the prices people will pay for used camera gear. Personally, I don't see the sense in paying more for something used then you can purchase it for new. The 28-70 you can get a bit of a break since it has been superceded by the 24-70. $700-$800 is the going price on ebay. The 28-70 has a reputation at least equal to the newer 24-70, but those estra 4mm are pretty crucial to me on a 1.6x camera. A new 24-70 could have been had for $900 on Amazon a couple months ago (incl. rebates) and it will again if you're patient.

Also consider the Tamron 28-75mm Xr Di. Close to L quality, but nowhere near L price.

sorry - i totally disagree w/ you
ive shot this lens and while it is 1/3 the price of the 24-70 it is NO WHERE near "close to L quality"
its loud, focus is slow and it is not as sharp

If it ain't "L", it won't get used by this girl!
I have to disagree with you on this one. There is a reason these L lenses are so expensive. They are much sharper, quicker, and quieter than many others. I have shot with many lenses, and once you use L lenses, it's hard to use anything else.

I wasn't trying to be harsh on KevC. I have shot with many lenses and just know what the L lenses are capable of. I wish they had F1.4 L lenses that were 70-200 or 24-70 because I would be the first in line to buy one!
No hard feelings I hope.

Yes it works! I just gave it a try:
- looked for "10-22"
- was returned 3 times the EF 10-22mm in 3 different categories (home-office, small biz, large company)
- then choosed it as a home item
- checked out
- pasted the JL6MK$330H9ZT4 code
et voilą:
Unit price $799.00
Dell Home Customers Save 15% off Select Cameras -$119.85
Total $679.15

I second that.
Unfortunately I have been bitten by the 'L" bug too. Unfortunately, it makes things PAINFUL for the pocketbook and unfortunately, longer to save for. I sure hope Dell has these deals in about 9 months. A 24-70 will make a GREAT christmas present for me... :D
