We have an 8 month old kitten that is showing himself to be a little hunter. As a trained biologist, I am fully aware of the impact that cats can have on the environment, but this is the first time that I tried to capture action with my 40D, and I must say I was extremely impressed. This is one of the more interesting sequences that I was able to capture. If the moderator thinks this belongs more in the wildlife area (after all, there IS a shrew!), then feel free to move it! ;) Stubbs' name does match his body, as he only has about a 4 inch stub he, along with all of his brothers and sisters, was born with.

The throw!

The drop!

The pounce!

The grab!

Got it!!

The play toss, and now I can eat!

The weather was 24 degrees with intermittent sleet, and I ran out in sweats and a t-shirt to capture about 60 images, so needless to say, I was cold!

Nice series. But it does kinda make you want to root for the underdog... or under-shrew, in this case!

I admit that is my favorite. I just wish I had caught him fully in the air!

True, but unfortunately, Ms. Shrew ended up as dinner. And trust me, Stubbs is very well fed, but the urge to hunt is so strong.

Interesting sequence.

I never can think of good lines. I like it!

AWESOME pics

Thank you!

great action Nice to meet Stubs We have a 1 year old tabby who chooses to prey on chipmunks. She is 100% catch and release. I've caught her many times taxiing them around the yard only to stop and play then they scoot away. We feed these cats too well for them to go beyond play hunting.

I'm actually not sure if he ate it or not. It was so cold that day that I went in the house before he was done playing with his kill. He had caught this on his own, and I just happened to see him in the yard doing insane leaps and tosses.

nice sequence

Thanks very much!

Much appreciation!

You'd think that would be the case here as well, as he gets fed 3 square meals a day. He's already getting to be a porker with a nice flab on his belly. There really is some fluff underneath all that fluff, trust me! He just can't seem to resist catching something "fresh."

I love cats but I can't help but feel sorry for that poor shrew. My cat is strictly indoors, which is good because I don't have to worry about her killing anything...except the occasional house centipede (those things are big & creeeeeeeepy).

I don't mind insects at all (I actually like them a lot), but I think I would probably be creeped out by a house centipede. They look mighty weird with all those legs. And yeah, poor shrew for sure. I don't think he let the little guy suffer at all. As a side note, did you know that shrews (Blarina spp.) have venomous saliva?
