My son, I should say...
Ethan took 1st place in his division, winning three matches to do so.

What kind of event was this? It's not wrestling, for #2 would be an illegal headlock.

It looks like juijitsu (sp). Muay Tai is a stand up style of fighting.

(The Association of Grappling Competitors)
Wikipedia Definition:
Grappling refers to the gripping, handling, and controlling of an opponent without the use of striking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strike_(attack)), typically through the application of various grappling holds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grappling_hold), choke holds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choke_holds), and counters to various hold attempts. Grappling forms an important part of both ground fighting and standing clinch fighting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinch_fighting). Sports that use grappling include Brazilian jiu-jitsu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_jiu-jitsu), Judo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judo), Mixed martial arts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_martial_arts) and Wrestling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrestling).
My son trains in Mixed Martial Arts, we have concentrated his training on Jiu Jitsu because he will not be fighting anytime soon...
His trainer trained for eight years under Royce Gracie.

Nice shots.
I think there is some concern about the migration of MMA into the youth area. While judo has always had submission holds (bending against the joint) and choke holds (trachea and carotid), traditionally these have been restricted to upper teen competitors, I believe.
Distress on faces seems to be a staple of wrestling and mma photography. Judo seems to get a bit more involved in the throws.
