I've been using ACR to process raw files from my Nikon D80 so when i switched over to 40D, i continued to use ACR. But i notice these problems:

Take a look at the green to black transition zone...it's smoother and more gradual in the DPP jpg compared to the ACR jpg. DPP version seems to have less noise as well?

processed with ACR ver 4.6.0.30

processed with DPP ver 3.3.1.1

Any thoughts/findings on this? Thanks :)

You got me Kurt -I do all of my processing with Elements 7. Adobe included picture style support (http://nocroppingzone.blogspot.com/2008/12/picture-style-support.html) in the latest camera RAW 5.2 -might want to check it out!

ACR has new camera specific profiles available for download that improve the color rendering and make it more comparable to DPP. Check out the thread below for details, the last post has info for the latest update.

Thanks, partman, John :)

I managed to install the camera profiles for my CS3/ACR4.6. Tried all the profiles and still, none would give me the smooth transition (green to black region) :(

IMHO - your asking a question & looking for an answer without giving enough info.

What are your settings in ACR?

Do you have sharpening applied to the image in ACR on the conversion or just to the preview?

What are the setting for the noise handling in ACR - eg. Luminance & Color?

Did you set up a default setting for ACR?

Are you applying tone corrections to the images?

Without knowing exactly what your doing in your raw conversion it could be anything.

Hi Palladium, all ACR default setting, Exposure - 0, Recovery - 0, Fill - 0, Black - 5, Brightness - 50, Contrast - 50, Clarity - 0, Vibrance - 0, saturation - 0.

Sharpening: Amount - 25, Radius - 1, Detail - 25, Mask - 0

Noise Reduction - Luminance - 0, Color - 25

The settings in the rest of the tabs were all 0s.

Fraid I always use DPP but be careful with comparisons- some of the RAW converters will read the camera settings and apply them as defaults in RAW processing (DPP does this).
Think most people have their favourite converters but suspect it's more a case of getting used to the best settings in each for your pics rather than amazing quality differences between them.

Thanks for the comment, Brian :). I had the Picture Style set to Neutral so it has to be something else in DPP that handled the conversion differently. One of them probably stronger Noise Reduction?:D

Compare the contrast of the two images. The image processes using ACR has more contrast than the one using DPP has and that's the reason why the transition doesn't look as smooth with ACR as it does with DPP. Set them both to the same contrast and see if you can still see a different.

I use ACR 4.6 and there are now come Adobe provided camera profiles. I have never used DPP so I can't comment on it. I use the Adobe standard beta2 in ACR 4.6
