Taking USB v Firewire out of the equation, is it true to say that the speed of a card reader is dictated purely by the speed of the card within it, i.e the reader itself has little influence on the download speed of a card?

That's what people told me. A card reader is a card reader.
I had an old Lexar reader that took several minutes to up load. I bought a new SanDisk for the Extreme III and now it takes less than one minute to upload a full 2 GB card.

Supposedly, but if you check out the card reader results (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/reader_report_multi_page.asp?cid=6007-9392) at Rob Galbraith, you'll see a difference among the different readers even with the same cards.

I have noticed a speed increase when using the Extreme III cards over the ultra IIs when downloading to my laptop. But this is only because I have a fast reader - if I only had something that was as fast as the Ultra IIs, then there wouldn't be a difference for downloading.
