Hello Everyone:
New to photography with a new camera. I purchased my first digital camera last weekend and am still in the process of reading the manual. I bought a Canon D50 kit with EF-S 18-200mm 3.5-5.6 IS lens. Will start to shoot some photos after finishing reading the manual of 200+ pages, have gone through 100+ already and am excited to start with my new hobby.

Congrats on the new camera and welcome to the forum. There are lots of friendly helpful people here. The best way to learn is to get out there and shoot. Post some pictures for us when you get a chance.

Congrats and welcome to the forum and to the world of Canon. You'll get invaluable advice here, so you've come to the right place. I have the 40D and love it, so you should be more than happy with the 50D. The 18-200 should also make a pretty good walk around lens to start out with and has a great range. I would suggest picking up a 50mm f/1.8 lens. It is around $90 and will let you explore shooting with a fixed focal length. Other than that, you might trying reading Understanding Exposure (http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-Photographs-Digital-Updated/dp/0817463003/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229465496&sr=8-1) by Bryan Peterson. You might have to ask a few questions here because he says some stuff that only pertains to certain film cameras, but in general it is a great introductory book. Other than that, just go out shooting and enjoy yourself.

When you have read your manual put it in your camera bag and do not lose it. 12 months later and I am still reading mine, and it is only a 400d. Enjoy yourself :)

Congrats on your camera & welcome aboard. My 50D arrives today:D Now, get out there and shoot..shoot..shoot and shoot some more. Wondering what happens if...try it and see. Experimenting answers many questions that pop up.
Happy shooting

Welcome to POTN! Read the front part of the manual a few more times, (don't lose it,) & read this, too: Post #47 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=5191658&postcount=47)
Click the "Thread: Need an exposure crutch?" link at the top-right if you'd like more info on exposure.

Finished reading the manual. I tried my 1st shots today. I just put on the camera to full auto and took some photos of my daughter and my dog in RAW. The flash went on and clicked after the auto focus gave me a go ahead but the photographs seem to have dark shades. I will post the pictures tommorrow morning as don't have the right internet speed right now. Don't know if I have done something wrong or its a brand new camera, hope its me:oops:

DSLR makers need to start putting this on their boxes :

Talk about jumping in with both feet...lol
A 50D for your first camera is quite a big step. Good luck.

Thank you for the encouraging words nw85887 & ssracer, but I don't give up easy. If its me I will learn and if its the camera I will have it replaced. Not the end of my world

I wasn't trying to put you down or anything. I hope you do get it figured out. I'm just learning myself and if I could have afforded a camera like that, I have to admit that I probably would have bought it too (I'm a gadget geek) :D

Full auto = green rectangle?
Does the 50D shoot RAW in green rectangle mode?
If you mean the built in camera flash, its not most powerful flash and if it pops up its a sign you need a bit more light. Find some natural light somewhere, there's usually some hanging around outside, and see what results you get with it.
