I covered an event a couple of weeks ago, and out of the blue I get an email from some publisher wanting a quote for non-exclusive rights to a couple of my photos for DVD sales and posters. I know I have to get with the persons photographed, and the promoter, for permission. But what should I charge for something like that? I was thinking around $200/photo for only rights to print the photo onto a dvd, nothing else. Or should I charge by dvd copy? That might be difficult to keep track of, itwould sort of be like royalties I guess.
THoughts? Thanks

Take a look at http://photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm
Its prices are just a suggestion but it could give you an idea for what to charge. You could also ask him first what he had in mind. Just incase its way more than what the above site recommends.

It came up with $450/photo.
But how about that compared to the path of charging per DVD and poster? Thoughts? Thanks

$450 for how many?
I think trying to get a license for use per production run would be better for you than trying a royalty pricing. First off you have to trust the publisher to give you a true accounting of how many are sold. Then it has to be decided when you get paid. Annually? Semi-annually? Quarterly? Monthly?
And what if the poster and DVD have a total combined sales of 500? You might make $5.
Take the sure money, get it priced per production run and offer a discount for future licensing of the images on future runs.
