Wintry Church Spire

This is the spire of First Baptist Church in Rome, GA. My brother and I were shooting a local clock tower landmark, turned around and realized we were shooting the wrong thing! C&C on composition, etc. appreciated.

Also, how does one avoid/correct the light "haloing" around the base of the spire as it cuts through the lower portion of pink sky?
