It's hard to get any detail in the dogs face since she's so black and the snow is so white. Tough shooting conditions. Maybe use a fill flash?

Film is much more amenable to this range of light than digital.
When I get these lighting conditions, I use film.

Yea that is gonna be tough... depends on the day, as well -- overcast will be kinder than any kind of sun. I agree with willard3 above; film would be a better choice as this is simply a hard limitation of digital sensors.
You can get something out of it but you must be in manual exposure mode. Take some test shots until the histogram is just up against the right side so that means the snow will be right on the verge of losing detail. That will give as much light to the black as possible. Fill flash might help a bit but you'll have to see.

We don't get a lot of snow so I don't have any great examples but that exposure is pretty close.
Oh yea you have to shoot RAW; if you shoot some sort of processed JPG out of the camera, it is going to add too much contrast.
