I have this little annoying problem with XP updates. Nothing serious, but it gets on my nerves.

Say XP told you to update, which you did. But after you finish, that little icon is still there and asks you to update again!. First I uninstalled these updates then installed them again. But that little icon is still there . Then went to options and told it not to notify my, I'll do it on my own. Even that didn't work

Anybody has this little problem (well it's not a problem really, just an annoyance). What should I do about it.

Not sure if this is what you want, but you can completely turn off autoupdate. Start->Settings->Control Panel->Automatic Update.

Update. Trying to be smart so scheduled the updates on specific day/time, but it didn't work

Time to try FlipsidE's suggestion.

I have never had problems with updates. They just happen. But, then, I am special.

I just turned them off completely, and I do them on my own once in a while.

That is the #1 thing you can do if you want to make your computer vulnrable to intrusion.. IMO not a good choice.

Instead of me telling Microsoft that it should check my machine for possible flaws, I let their multi billion dollar R&D dept notify my machine of updates

I do the same, but I have a periodic ritual of antivirus, updates, Spybot, and Adaware, plus some registry maintenance and a defrag. I choose not to let my computer call home without my immediate permission.

I like to have control over what M$ installs on my machine, so I run auto update manually once per week or so. My antivirus system keeps the definitions up to date, and i'm behind a firewall, and i've never had a security problem. I've never had a virus or worm either.

Mine doesnt autoinstall... but I don't disable it. It will always check and download the apps, then tell me what it wants to do..

Microsoft will shortly be turning off update support for pirated copies of XP. Fortunately them there pirates are smart, and the latest versions can't currently be dedected by the multy billion dollar R&D dept. Its fun watching this game of cat and mouse. I'm still trying to figure out which is which.

Must go. Just got an email. Apparently some rich Nigerian family need help getting their fortune out the country. I guess I'll help.;)

It sounds like you haven't updated in a while. Some updates need to be installed in layers. After a particular update like SP2, it will ask you to get the sp2 updates after the install. Don't uninstall any of your previous updates and continue running it until it is finished....sometimes for a new install with an old xp disk, I may have to reboot several times and have 5 or 6 layers of updates. Some updates need to be install by themselves, some can be done all at once.

Auto update hogs computer resources because it is constanty checking the microsoft server. Although its not a huge amount of resources, everybit counts, especially when editing or gaming, so i turn it off all the time and once i week i check for updates.

The first thing I usually do is turn off Auto Updating, which includes turning off the notification service as well. A little piece-of-mind, when it come's to keeping pop-ups to a minimum. heh

Guys, what do you think of SP2, do you recommend it. Did anybody have a problem with it. Thanks.

Although I have read about problems with SP2 updates I did it and could not imagine not doing it. It addresses many security flaws. By default I beleive it turns on the automatic updates. I let it notify me of available updates but I install them manually.

I've installed it (on my laptop - desktop is still running 98SE) and have not noticed any problems.

I put it on as part of a clean install, and so far I really like it, there certianly havn't been any problems.

The only thing that bugs me a little is the "security monitor" but its easy to turn off, or tone down, and my Antiviris actual works with, which stops it telling me all sorts of redundant information.

Update. Upgraded to SP2 and that little annoying problem is gone. However, there is another issue that came up. After the update, it seems there is a big chunk of the HD gone, something in the neighborhood of 7.0 GB (that's a wild estimate). Did anybody have the same experience, and what can one do to reclaim that amount of HD space.

Thanks

7GB gone? That's a lot, my XP SP2 install's "only" 2.5GB. Try using the disk cleanup tool, and in the control panel system applet set the system restore thingy to use only a little space.

7GB is a bit high, but if you asked it to give you the option to later uninstall SP2 it does make a hell of a lot of backup files.

Depending on how many updates you had been getting over time, if you had no updates, then SP2 would be about 300MB, of course that is highly compressed files that might expand to 2 to 4 GB. Plus I've heard that 40% of the XP code was re-written as SP2 installs - a major overhaul.

If SP2 automatically backed up all the windows files, libraries, etc. you had plus the added files, it is not unheard of that 7GB could have been used.

Are you sure there's not a windows swap file in there somewhere?
