Hey folks...Please do as the title says and give me more ammo as to why my uncle should go with a Canon DSLR - Likely the Rebel XT and not the Nikon D70
Thanks...

He wants to buy the Camera for Shooting his daughters in Taekwando, and needs good zoom and will be doing this in low light...

Well, does he already have any Nikon lenses? If he does, he should probably stay with Nikon.
If not, you could convince him by saying you could share Canon equipment (lenses and such) and save money over time. That is, if you both live near each other and are inclined to share accessories.

You could do few things:
1- Print the specs of each and let him compare for himself.
2- See what lens he would like then show him the prices of each brand.
3- Since he wants to shoot indoors/high iso, get the reviews on noise of each camera.
4- Not sure about this one, but compare battery life for him.
Hope this helps.

Get him to compare images produced by both. When I was shopping for my 300D the obvious alternative was the D70 and to be honest once I had spent some time looking at 100% crops from the two it was a no brainer for me. I just didn't like the images produced by the Nikon. If all I have read about it is true then I guess comparing the D70 with the new RebelXT will be even more of a no brainer.

Tell him that Nikon makes good cameras but bad sensors. Canon makes good cameras and excellent sensors..............so Canon wins!!! :-)

The best way to prevent him from buying a D70 is to put a 20D in his hands.

It's simple: Canon DLSR owners are far better looking...

I think the 300D in silver couldn't look more amatur or more unprofessional, but it sure does take good pictures, and that's what counts. To me the nikon feels sturdier than the digital rebels, but when it comes down shot for shot, you get more for your money by going Canon.

The D70 is a very good camera, and if your uncle is happy getting that, let him! For the vast majority of users, it really doesnt matter whether they use Canon or Nikon or Pentax or Minolta.
Y'all can burn me at stake now. :)

For low light application, it DOES matter.
If your uncle compares the ISO noise of the D70 at 1600 ISO to the noise of the 20D at 3200 ISO, he will realize that they have essentially the same noise level. This buys him an extra stop with any lens he is using... quite a difference, if you ask me.

Andy

Perhaps your uncle has some reasons to get a Nikon:
- does he prefer the Nikon systems like lenses; flash
- is he get used to Nikon cameras;
- has he already got Nikkor lenses?

Good point, Andy. Personally, I never use anything more than ISO 800 - either with film or now with digital, so this isnt an area that really registers on my list of critical things. If the uncle is shooting TKD, then light isnt going to be an issue and I doubt if he'll need that high ISO either. Still, for those who do require the ultimate low light performance, the Canon is worth looking into.
Generally, though, I belong to the school of thought that for most of us photographers, it isnt the camera brand that holds back our photography.
Cheers,
Vandit

I understand about not using anything more than ISO 800 on film  , but I use ISO 800 as standard for outdoors shot with my 20D in darker conditions and have taken the occasional 1600 or 3200 shot when needed.
If you want to get 1/500 to freeze motion in a maybe less-than-optimal-lit dojo, you might find yourself resorting to ISO 1600 or 3200 even with an 85/1.8 lens wide open earlier than not.
Best regards,
Andy

From what I had seen I thought it was worse then that
D70 at 800 equals 20D at 3200. (or so it looked to me from pics I have seen)
Although I do suffer from a bias

As owner of Nikon D70, it is not the best low light performer - too much noise at 1600. BUT if your uncle can use flash, the D70 in commander mode will trigger a Nikon Speedlight wirelessly and it can be placed near the action.

The D70 is a classy piece of kit capable of producing excellent results. It's certainly rated better than Canon's equivalent, the 300D.
Wait, I just read a review of the new 350D in this weeks BJP. The 350D does more than just close the gap between the D70 and Canon's equivalent, with N***n's answer, the D70s, falling short.
Canon rules the roost (again).

I checked out the 300d, the 350d and the Nikon and went with the 300d and hacked firmware. The 350d would have been third and the Nikon second. Sorry ... to me maybe the Uncle has more sense than you    though my view will not necessarily be shared by many, I agree. Feel and usability are important to me and I like the 300d with grip with my big lenses and the features of interest I can have on the 300d with the firmware. 350d would have cost me approx £250 more at the time. No brainer to me :p

That was basically exactly what I had typed in the reply :p
But then I decided to check DPReview and according to them it's not that pronounced.
So I changed my post to be on the safe side.
Still, I think you might be right. Nikon has a very bad reputation for low light performance.
Flash is normally not allowed when you want to shoot martial arts. At a big tournament maybe (there you would also have decent lighting), but certainly not in a normal training.
Best regards,
Andy

Regardless of which camera your uncle selects, the best advice you can give is very fast lens and image stabilization!;)

Nope, the only reason is the camera shop told him it was better than the 300D...and for all intents and purposes he is right - especialy with regards to the kit lens that accompanies them. However for shooting in low light he is going to need a different lens and well with the 350XT and the 20D the game isn't even a close one...
