Couple of my mates play the union, for MMU, and some local teams, if I remember correctly, they had a game with Eccles around 3 weeks ago(maybe 4, but not entirely sure)

looks like league jumpers to me... i don't see any line-ins, scrum size, or anything else in the pics which indicate union...

nice pics, as always, Gu!

What's the difference between Rugby League and Union anyway? Can you tell from the photo of the game and players??? That's magical to me!

I would definately say Union the guy in the scrum cap in #1 has to seen too many mauls and in pic # 2 there are guys on the deck behind the action and you would not see that in League as there is no ruck and maul.

An interesting thing here, I have never heard the term "line in" I thought they were universally known as "line outs"

Anyway sGu I played rugby for over 25 years and only stopped a few years ago at the age of 45 so if you want any advice give me a call.

Nice pics.

15 players in Union 13 in League (no flankers)
No Ruck and Maul in League
No Line Outs in League
After x number of tackles in league there is a turnover (invariably the team in possession chose to kick)
Different points system
and most of all Union has Class..........

Cheers Neil for all the detailed break down :D

I'm going to shoot Varsity Rugby games between Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester Metropolitan University Chesire Campus and University of Manchester coming Wednesday, all day Rugby!!! Honestly, I can't wait!

oh, I will try to identify Union and League myself :D

line-in, line-out... :o in any event, the ball was put into touch... also, i forget you guys sometimes wear short sleeve jumpers in union over there :p

the biggest difference is immediately apparent from the sideline to the un-initiated:
in league, after each tackle, play sorta stops. the person tackled stands and 'plays' the ball by tapping his/her foot on the ball - passing it back to the dummy-half, who then passes it or runs. it's almost like 'downs' in american gridiron. it is definitely possible for sevaral players to be on the ground behind the action (it doesn't look that far behind), especially at Uni level. doesn't always have to be ruck n maul - just over-commiting on the tackle, followed by a pass.

in union, play just continues - the tackled player puts the ball out to be played immediately, otherwise a penalty is awarded. generally 5 tackles and a kick to turn it over to the other team. sometimes, teams may kick on 4, to take advantage of nobody back on the other team. also, in union there will be lots more kicking without making too many plays - for strategy. imho, there is much more team strategy in union, where league tends showcase more individual effort. both codes are quite enjoyable to watch.

It really depends on the light, but generally my bottomline is 1/400 sec, ideally 1/640 or 1/800, based on that, wide aperture to isolate background, then lowest ISO possible
