Well the rumors have been swirling for a couple of weeks, but I'm afraid it is true. One of the finest air racers ever to grace the sky looks like it won't race again. Owner Terry Bland has confirmed that Dago Red is being retired. Here is a pic in honor. Notice the speed on the side. I was there to witness the lap noted, it was something to see.

Sort of like, "The King is retired. Long live the King?"
"I love the smell of racing gas in the morning" Me, too!

A nice shot to keep in the ole scrap book. Too bad He's "hanging it up", but I imagine it cost Him a small fortune to keep Dago Red going in the race circuit. And we thought camera gear is expensive. ;)

Thanks Tim. One thing I noticed in those photos was that it's almost impossible to find the outline of the retractable landing gear in the shots where it's flying overhead. I cant help but wonder if that gear has been modified for less wind resistance?

The gear is stock, but every single inch of Dago Red has been gone over and over so that all the doors fold up and fit like a glove. There is really nothing on the airplane that creates any uneeded drag. It is the smoothest Mustang on the planet.

I was kinda thinking it was something like that. ;) :D
