Thought I'd post my first couple of pics for your viewing pleasure! Hope you enjoy, please feel free to critique as I am eager to learn!

Taken with 300D and kit lens with +6 closeup filters (I have since bought a Sigma 105mm macro lens but I'm still pleased with how these shots turned out) at ISO100. The pink flower was taken at f5.6 and the green leaf f7.1 as I wanted a fairly shallow DOF on both images.

Cheers,

Nick

Beautiful lighting, imagine what you can do with a EF 100mm 2.8 Macro ;)

Thanks sGu! The lighting was with a desk lamp LOL!

Yes, a Canon 100mm macro would be lovely but budget only allowed for the Sigma, but I'm extremely pleased with it nevertheless. I'm looking forward to the weather brightening up so I can get outside and really try it out! :)

It's not the size of the light source, it's how you use it ;)

You did a superb job with the lamp, it shows that you know exactly what you're doing and you nailed WB, too.

Regarding the lens purchase, if I were you, I'd save up for a little longer to get a Canon one. Or, go to www.fredmiranda.com, register, and there are couple of them for sale at the moment, with nearly 2 dollars to 1 pound exchange rate, it sure beats UK Sigma price!

Thanks sGu. I used a custom WB because with the WB set to Auto these shots come out with a strong orange cast!

Too late! I already bought the Sigma a couple of weeks ago. Got a good price on it from a UK supplier and I'm happy with it. Cheers for the link to fred miranda though, I'm sure that it will be a useful avenue to investigate for future purchases.
