At the moment I am in college studying 4 subjects...one of which is Graphic Design. Recently we have been given a project- we had 14 to choose from. I am leaning towards

'Produce an outcome which creatively exploits candlelight or similar low lighting'

Although this was not in the graphic design reccomendations (it was in the photography course reccomendations), I would like to have a go at this.

The first question that came to me was...how broad is the opportunity of this, because not only do i have to do this photographically, I also have to make it 'graphics design worthy'. So I wondered what graphic design actually is- 'Visual Communication'. So I have to somehow take a really good photo(s) to represent a meaning. The meaning is going to be from my perspective, not a corporate viewpoint- maybe even becoming slightly controversial in some ways- but I would like it to be deep.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could do? techniques to use? any ideas would be helpful!

Thanks!

Rob.

Rob, slow down. You seem panicking. You are throwing too many questions at the same time.

So you are basically asking how to "'Produce an outcome which creatively exploits candlelight or similar low lighting' ". Is that correct.

yyyyeah...but this someway has to have something to do with Graphic Designe...I was thinking of taking a picture, with a meaning maybe, and turning this into an advertising campaign ot something like that.

artists! they can't ask EASY questions can they. rob, i read your post and am going to have my sister log in and hopefully give you some insight or direction. She, too, took a graphics design course which led her into photography. She, more than I, is into the artistic side of photos and can lend you some help. The project itself does sound interesting, and I wish you all the luck with it.

I don't know what your budget or resources are, but how about laying out a number of 'votive' candles into a pattern or something that you can relate to graphic design. If the budget permits, use the little glass holders, perhaps using different color holders.

Just a stream of consciousness. . .

Have Fun,

^-- that's a neat idea. You could do a lot of interesting things with that, depending on how you arranged the candles and the colors of the glass involved. Candlelight and water is a nice combination as well.

This sounds likie a neat project. I'll think about it and see what I can come up with to maybe help you out in the idea department.

...wondering if anyone had any ideas. I really want this to be original. Haha! Doesn't original imply that you use your own ideas? ;-)

lol! thats true to an extent. My imagination isnt at its peak atm :-P so the final outcome couold at least be original.

Oh yeah, thanks for the idea! I have been discussing this with some other people and came up with the idea of getting people to think about their lives. I might make a selection of different posters, all with 'Is this what it's all about' written on them and having dark photo's of something natural for one, something commercial for another, something fun with another and something family orientated for the final one. THis is made to trigger peoples thoughts about how they live, and what they do things for.

Do you think this could work?

I might make a selection of different posters... Pick the one that you like the best & work on it. Shoot a lot of variations, not just the one that you have in mind at the time. I'll bet that you get ideas for others while you're doing it.
