This is the first photo with my 20D that i somewhat like. It is right off the camera. I'm at the beginner stage of photography so don't be too rough! :D
Also, this is the first rose of the year on our flower bed.

Not a bad picture. But i feel it looks a little over exposed or over saturated.. Have you sharpened it in photoshop or adjusted any levels and why are you playing with white balance? let the camera do that.. Keep up the good work :) ..

I haven't done anything with it in photoshop. The SLR is very new to me so I was just playing with settings on my 20D.

I wouldn't discourage anyone from using the WB controls. They are there to offer the photographer greater control of the image. Better yet, I suggest shooting this kind of subject in RAW, and processing that file in PS. This will afford you even greater latitude for adjusting the exposure, tint, WB, saturation, contrast, etc. I would encourage him to use the tools in his hands to make the changes that you suggest.
Dirty Shirt,
Go for it. Try RAW!!!! The sooner you do this, the better your pics will be. Don't let the camera intrude on the processing of the image. It is your domain. Letting the camera process the image would be like Ansel Adams taking his film to the supermarket to be developed. The camera is for taking pictures.
OK, that said I still use Large/Fine JPEG for many situations, where quantity and write speed are more important than processing options (i.e. sports, live band, kids, any kind of action). But in this case we've got a flower. It isn't going anywhere. Take your time. Besides, if this is what you got straight out of the camera, you are 90% there. It is a very nice shot, nice use of the large (low value) aperture to blur out the background.

On the other hand, you could learn how to get the camera to produce the image the way you want it using JPG, and save yourself a lot of time on the computer. That flower is a bit oversaturated, i'd throw white ballance onto auto or daylight and see how it comes out.
