A little about myself:

Got annoyed with the amount of work dealing with models
Sold everything (5Dii/24-70/70-200mkii/Elinchrom lights etc)
Missed photography
Just ordered 7D and 17-55 as a walk-around setup.

You need to find some spots down your way for us to come shoot. Either Waco or Brownwood is OK. We travel some distances when we shoot. Todd usually drives, I usually navigate and keep him awake. Chris usually sleeps, H e wakes when we stop to shoot or stop to get a Chimachanga at Alsups. LOL

Hey guys, I've got a really good buddy of mine coming with me, he's an awesome photographer and does a lot of killer night and landscape work.

We've been checking weather and it looks like we'll have rain on Sat morning but then it's clearing out by the afternoon, so we might have really good cloud formations for sunset and hopefully somewhat clear skies for the night time.

I'm looking at some spots down around Meridian, out towards San Saba, etc.. Basically a big triangle between Waco, Brady, and Fort Worth.

We're going to meet up at 3:30-4. Not sure where to meet up yet, it will depend on our first location. Probably somewhere off I35 maybe around Hillsboro or Waco and then go from there.

I'm still working on spots, and I'll throw up a map with spots as soon as I can (it might be tomorrow night, since I just got home not too long ago and it's getting late).

As for what you'll need to bring:



Warm clothes (it's going to be cold), rain jacket, and maybe a ziplock to throw over your gear if we get weather.

Tripod is a must.

Remote shutter trigger is important as well, so that you can do bulb exposures past 30seconds.

Water, beer, whatever you want to eat and drink.

A good flashlight.


I may have a spare trigger, but please bring one if you can. If you don't have one, you can get one at Frys, etc.. for about $25.

Personally, I'd recommend a wired remote like one of these:

I use one of the Bowen models... they're intervelometers, but they also function as remote shutter trigger. Upside, is that you can do time-lapse with these as well. The downside is that it is not wireless (but honestly, I don't know why you would want wireless anyways unless you plan on taking photos of yourself)

Okay, slight change of plans... I think it might be more conducive if we head out I-20 instead. This will give us much more options, especially if it rains.

The plan is to meet up in Thurber at 3:30pm, right off of I-20. There's a giant old Stone Smokestack there, you can't miss it. Map: http://g.co/maps/aj8zp

From there, we'll head out towards Hubbard Creek Lake for sunset... Here's what I've shot from there:

Keep your fingers crossed for the rain to get out of here, but I think heading this direction will help, since the rain will hopefully go further south from this area. The Stamford Inn is enough of a spot in itself, and it's indoors, so if we do have rain, we'll be alright.

I've had this for a couple years and it works fine. I am non-pro and make no money at this so price does play a big factor in my gear decisions, I tend to buy very little so my product knowledge is not very extensive.

The only time this trigger gets annoying is when I'm using my wireless flash trigger receiver in the hot shoe for OCF, then the shutter release unit just hangs by the little cable that plugs into the camera body. The combination of the two works but it would be nice to have something that did both, but that would cost. If you're not using a flash or hot shoe this trigger works great, I have never had a problem and I use it regularly due to my annoying camera shake. My two cents.

Just got back... we got skunked by the weather, no sunset and the clouds never went away, so it's a good thing we shot the hotel!

It was great meeting all of you. Pat, I am sorry we couldn't have you stay the whole time, we had a good time. It was nice meeting you and we'll definitely hook up for a trip in April out to Hill Country.

I got to play with my camera a lot yesterday and the screen was a huge bonus. I had someone wanting to see all of my shots so I flipped it out and told them to watch over the shoulder. I only had to set to review time out a little more than normal and it worked like a champ.

Thank you. Woodway is in the Waco area which is only an hour and traffic is moderate so it's doable. DFW is just too far at this time. I'm renting some macro lenses and am planning future practice shoots.

No HDR. The bluebonnets were shot on Macro, AE, vivid setting, 1/800, 4.5, Eval, -2/3 exposure compensation (for most of my outdoor stuff), and ISO 100.

Im getting ready to come into a ton of cash (2 year veterans affairs claim finally coming through)... id love to buy a large warehouse and start up a studio.

Too bad my wife is active duty and she might get stationed somewhere else starting in Aug...

But in 3 or so years (if she gets out) id love to come back to DFW and buy a house and open up a studio....
