Just wanted to see how many people we've got from DFW here on the forums. Would be nice to shoot with other people occasionally. :)

Surprised there isnt an "official" thread for DFW yet, as big as it is here, so figured i'd start one!

cool, glad to see some people finally jumping on this thread. Maybe once we get some more we can get some groups going at some point.

I'll definitely be headed to the zoo in the next month or so to give my 70-200 f/2.8L IS a whirl. Should be picking it up in the next couple of weeks.

Im in arlington btw, but work in dallas and am frequently all over the metroplex.

Haha. I'm attaching it to an XT though, so needless to say I'm jealous of your 50D. :)

Decided to go the glass route first instead of body since glass will last a lifetime and bodies are more like computers nowdays. Replaceable every 2 years or so. Bleh.

There is a forum called the www.TexasPhotoForum.com (http://www.texasphotoforum.com/) that has specializes in the state of Texas and then has sub levels of the various cities from there. such as Dallas / Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, El Paso, etc.

agreed 100%

also, learn to use the search function on the forum or you will learn to hate it due to all of the jerks that will ruin your thread by telling you to search.

Thankfully i knew that coming into this forum, so i try not to post repetitive questions. lol.

In the equipment section ... there can be a little feed back on not using search.

But in the picture sharing section is a good place to hang out.
Post pictures and you will get direct feed back.

Around POTN - reading material that is often suggested in 'Understanding Exposure' for any experience level. But great for beginners.

It answers more than this is 'a f stop' and this is a shutter speed.
It dives into the 'why / when / how'.
-Why do i chose f8 on a shoot when i can select f4 thru f16 (example)
-if i am shooting a lake/shore shot w/ some clouds at sun set - how do i meter correctly?

It is a big softcover book. I actually read it last year and keep it for reference.
I have been shooting pictures since the film days and picked up digital in the last 3 years.
I learned a couple of new techniques and reinforced others. good stuff.....

And Welcome to POTN.

Look forward to seeing you around.....

Thanks for the advice. I have been doing a lot of reading in the various forums and found lots of tutorials to keep me busy for a while.

I got my camera about 2 weeks ago, but I've been practicing a lot. Here are some of the pictures I've been taking if you guys want to take a look.

The only thing I know about El Paso (other than the Marty Robbins song ;) ) is that it is closer to California than Dallas. That may be a good or bad thing depending on your position. It looks like there is quite a bit of cool terrain around there. Lots of Army people too.

Today is a good day for anyone that is interested in Deep Ellum. There is an unveiling of a new wall at Swiss.

It was dark and I didn't have any lighting with me but I had to take a picture anyway. Here is a section of the new wall. The amazing tallent in the photo is my son!

I've been chasing trains around north Texas with a P&S and video for many years. I've recently become interested in improving my photography skills (and gear...) and expanding my range of subjects. I have been working on that. I bought a set of cheap tubes and tried them with my Tammy and my fifty... I have been trying to work out a couple of issues, I find that I need a TON of light - I have the equivalent of several thousand watts of light but placement is killing me. And overall focusing - because of the less than razor width of focus, I am having difficulty producing pleasing shots. I dont like bugs, but have been working out with spices. Think I am going to try to build some type of modified rail system.

BTW Todd - Thanks for the tips on night shooting... The shots I got after I reset were TONS better!

Looking at your last image makes me want a WA lens now too! Oh - I would be happy to hang on to that 70-200 for you so you don't have to lug it around... Given that you aren't using it too much - >sigh< the things I do for my brothers!

Hey, just saw this... yes, I think Butch is correct.

By the way guys, let's not get too busy... let's get together soon. I'm open next weekend if anyone is interested in doing a shoot somewhere. I haven't shot the Fortworth water gardens before, if anyone is interested in that, the stock yards, the sky line, whatever.

I'm up for anything.

I am out for this weekend (just double checked - Beth has us booked solid)... I am working on getting reshoot for a senior for sometime during the weekend of the 17th-18th - I think that she is wanting the Arboritum... When I get that scheduled I will know better what I can do that weekend.. Any thoughts on timing? I am usually better on Saturdays.

Butch - Were you able to get some fireworks shots? I heard (too late for me to get there) that there was a display in Fair Park on the 5th. I shot Kaboom town in Addison...Need to get the shots over here!

Todd - I really like the layout of your website - do you have any "non-custom, in the can, already created" website packages that you would let go of for not too much $$$? I do have some HTML and CSS knowlege... I have a domain - apixelintime.com hosted at godaddy. Let me know.

I thought I posted them after Todd's shots in this thread... I know the images were a little large, Thinking they got "modded" out... Oh well - no biggine on that... I also posted them in either night time or 30 second exposures as well...

Definately lets try to work on another meet!

Butch/Todd - Okay - I have a psuedo-senior shoot (non paid, she is 15, her dad will be there) on 7/17 6-7:30 ish. I have asked her if it would be okay if I brought another photog along - waiting answer - Interested? (Deep Ellum - although this may change)

7/24 from 3-5pm - paid senior shoot.

Looks like I am good for anything outside those times.

Butch/Todd - Just a thought for a possible meet Saturday Night - 7/17... I went to a Rangers game last weekend and noticed that there are some really cool features of the ballpark. Also, while walking over to the park, "Jerry World" was off in the near distance and would make a cool perspective study... Plus, I got addicted to night photography from your buliding shoot, Butch. You all up for it?

Todd Lambert

Okay - Lets meet up at the Wal-mart. It is a stones throw from there...

915 East Randol Mill Road, Arlington, TX

I think that if we meet up in the "outer parking lot" at 8pm, we should be good to go.

I have changed my truck, I have a black Dodge Ram quad cab - Butch is in a black Chevy extended cab. Todd - I think you were in a gray-green Scion or Cube right? Butch and I have each others phone numbers - Todd, I lost yours when I lost my iphone last month. E-mail yours to me
christopher at apixelintime dot com

and I will reply with mine and Butch's and forward yours to Butch as well...

Anyone else up for an Arlington Night shoot?

Okey Dokey Pokeys!

Here are mine... Thanks again Bruce for the loan of your battery. As an aside note, I cannot for the life of me find my charger... I bet it is hiding in plain sight, watching right now and laughing. I have ordered another and it WILL have the car adapter with it... I bet it is a loooong time before I go out to shoot and not check my charge...

So without further fanfare - the photos:

1.)

2.) This is a 2 image pano because Todd made me use that crappy 85mm 1.2L of his...(JOKE! Thank you for letting me use this - hope the drool marks come off) On my 40, I had to almost go back to the road and still had to take this in 2 shots...

Oh, man... Chris those are sweet!

I love #4 - that is some great composition.

I am trying to think of somewhere cool for us to shoot this weekend, hopefully it will be cool.

Michael Chang, you're still invited.. sorry to hear about your mishap.. anything revolving around leaking water is a bad, bad bad.... ouch

If you're around this upcoming Saturday, we're planning on doing another shoot somewhere in the Dallas area (not totally sure where yet, will post more details in here soon)

apixelintime
19th of July 2010 (Mon), 10:41
Todd - thank you sir! You are a great teacher! #4 was my fav, and I usually lead with my best, but I wanted these to go chronologically. I actually prefer yours to mine from the bridge... I bet I could crop and get the look of yours but I would lose all sorts of detail.

I like your pullback of the stadium in the daylight. I just wish there was more water in the lake (moat!)

It is funny, the shot (#2) where I used your 85, here it just looks like a crop of anything else I took, but at 100% if there were a person in there, you could see what he was thinking. That lens is just that sick!

I have an idea. maybe in the next month or so, lets all have a meet at a "meeting place" that has wifi and power and the 3 of us bring our laptops. Bruce, we will get you to speed so you can put your stuff on line as well. I really want to see what you have shot!!!!!

It is just a learning curve - Todd and I are where we are at because we reverse engineered things and asked questions. If we work it correctly, you may be able to get a jump on the curve by learning the good that we have learned and not going through the "wrong stuff". On the internet stuff, he is by far the master... He could 'fart' better websites than I could build! I have learned a lot from the both of you as well...

If you want, I will write up a few things to do prior to any kind of "computer" meeting that we have.

OOh - there is a can of worms that is frightening.

1st choice to make - PC or Apple... I went with PC as that is what I have always had and my desk top is too.

I have a 4 or 5 year old Compaq that is in need or replacement. I think I gave about $450 for it new at MicroCenter... You could easily get by with similar money with better bells and whistles that what I have (tech grows "cheaper" by the minute). For a little more, you could have a kick @$$ image editing laptop. I run all of my non 9-5 work on it.

I think that Todd is a Mac guy... I personally have never used one, but I certainly would not be opposed to trying one out. I understand for imaging they are the way to go. As close to an apples to apples comparison, the mac is going to be about 2-3x more $... A 15" Macbook pro is going to start at about $2k...

Chris, thanks I need to buy a laptop. what kind do I need.

As far as personal computer goes, there's so many choice out there.

Over the last 15 years, I've used everything from an HP desktop / laptop, Sony Vaio's, Dell's and finally the Mac's.

Don't get me wrong, there's not a single personal computer out there that's perfect or trouble free. Apple has it's shares but, I've noticed Mac's are far less prone to system crashes, errors and virus infections.

Sure, it cost a little more than the Window's based PC's but, it's certainly worth every penny.

For home office, I love my iMac 27" and for traveling, I use my 15" Macbook Pro.

+1 from up her in Anna. Used PC for years had problems with them all. Bought HP, Toshiba, Sony, built several and it didn't matter it would have its problems. Now using Mac. Got a Macbook Pro 15" and the 24" monitor with it, that I am on now, it is running slower than I would like, but it and my 13" are working fine. Got Snow leopard when it came out and when I upgraded from my 13" to my 15", I was able to connect one of three different options from one computer to the next and when OS X was done I had a mirror HD on my new 15" in a matter of minutes. I love all the easy to use software that came with it. Only issue that I recently read about is that the new USB 3.0 and SATA upgrades that run 5Gb/s will not be available for awhile. I have tried to find an express card that would work with my Macbook Pro, but nothing so far, but the only way I would trade my Mac for a PC is if it were a Super computer and then I would sell it so I could by more Macs.
