I'm not familiar with the history of Leica but I'm guessing a body from that early is worth adding to a "serious" collection?
Maybe someone more familiar with Leica collectability can shed some light on why this model, in this condition went for so much.

I found some new models for about twice that price, so I wouldn't consider it to be that good of a deal.

That right there is my goal in life. To be rich enough to not think twice before buying an "absolutely non functional piece of ancient metal in original black paint" and be able to justify that its a collectors item.
Scratch that, shouldn't have to justify at all.

So he bought a broken one for more than a working one is worth?

WOW. And I'd think it belonged to garbage.

Obviously the buyer thought it was worth paying more than the estimated book price, putting into play an aspect that is very relevant to any market: at times, personal want is an entity that is more than willing to pay outside of the official book value.

Maybe the buyer has sentimental value for the camera, long lost one!

Wow. Makes me wonder how many hundreds of dollars I've thrown away over the years. Mental note: list things on ebay first.

Actually anymore ya need to research your goodies first...apparently the key to that body is the black as well as the serial number under 1-million. Notice the higher serial numbers sell for significantly less.
I've sold stuff over the years some people would shake their head at...but, to someone who enjoys the disease that is collecting, these pieces gave them some enjoyment. Much the way people who like video games get enjoyment out of their $50-$70/game or $1500 for a camera lens......whatever works I suppose... ;)

Yeah, there's research and knowledge involved... of course. My comment was made tongue-in-cheek. I seriously doubt I've actually had anything valuable in my possession because I'm pretty new to the hobby and have had very few hand-me-downs.
That said, I've read many stories about people donating valuable equipment/objects because they didn't know any better. Of course, some people suspect that they have something valuable and make a different mistake altogether... this example is my favourite: http://www.newlifeauctions.com/allsopp.html

oh, geeze, sorry if my comment sounded too serious!! I was with you...I have been selling antiues & collectibles for over 40yrs now and STILL am amazed when I see something like the camera body see for almost a grand!
I once sold a Mad Hatter cookie jar with a hairline crack, for, now sit down, $435 because in perfect condition it would have brought around $1200...I found it last second we were at an estate sale for $8...had no clue about the value but just 'knew' it had to be worth at least the $8...then there was the old Wallace China (restaurant ware) Chuck Wagon coffee mug I found for $3 in an antique mall that sold for $345 but that was years ago and prolly would not being 1/3 of that on eBay today.
You just NEVER know what is doing well or, what might have value, especially if it's detritus you have had laying around for YEARS or decades! hehehehehe...
Sometimes prices get skewed because of the good old Thermonucular Snipes/proxy bids collide...which is always funny to see happen...but is usally a mistake a bidder makes only ONCE in their life...but yaaa knoooow some folks, they have more cash than sense...and good for them!! hehehehehe...
Tracking stuff like this is such fun and makes me want to empty the photogear counter everytime we visit the thrift stores. Because, well, I have ZERO clue about camera gear values...might be a good idea to start though. :D

No worries... it's hard to tell on here sometimes :)
That might not be a bad side-project if you have the time for it. And hey, if it doesn't work out maybe you can be an expert on the Antiques Roadshow ;)
