I think my flash is dead - and I don't know why! Will th 580exII power-on even if there is not enough juice to fire a flash? I know this is a stupid question, but I don't have extra batteries around right now ;)

If thats not the case, I'm screwed. There is no reason it would just stop working; it has less than 100 shots on it! Any ideas?

Sounds to me like dead batteries. Don't panic, yet!

LOL! I just read last night in the manual the number of flashes that a 580EXII can do on a set of batteries. Guess what the number is? It's in your manual.

Last week I was shooting some basketball when an acquaintance came up and asked for some tips. He had his Nikon and a flash. The flash would not work. He said "I haven't used this in a year, so I don't know what's going on." I suggested he could use some of my spare batteries. When he opened the battery compartment he noticed that his batteries had leaked all over the inside.

Get some rechargable batteries. They'll last much longer.

I am always amused by people who forget that stuff that runs on batteries may actually need fresh batteries once in a while!

Okay, first click here: http://www.fatwallet.com/redirect/bounce.php?afsrc=1&mid=10395641&url=http://www.thomas-distributing.com/sd (will get you a 5% discount)

Then next search for these and order two sets of 4: http://thomasdistributing.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=122_104_106&products_id=1020&SP_id=68

Then add either of these to the order:
1. LaCrosse Charger (http://thomasdistributing.com/shop/la-crosse-bc900-battery-charger-w-lcd-displaybrdeluxe-travel-bag-accessory-kit-brprice-5497-p-539.html?osCsid=dl99ri41j8mpiocemqrfnap8h4)
2. Maha Charger (http://thomasdistributing.com/shop/la-crosse-bc900-battery-charger-w-lcd-displaybrdeluxe-travel-bag-accessory-kit-brprice-5497-p-539.html?osCsid=dl99ri41j8mpiocemqrfnap8h4)

Or any of the other chargers on the Thomas site.

And you should be good to go.

If you have to use disposables - use the Duracell Lithiums. For the first time a claim of a long lasting battery is true. I do a lot of travel shooting and just can't add a charger to the myriad of other things that scream for a plug at night. Lithiums rock.

My .02 here.

With my 580EX 2 firing mostly 1/2 to full power I got 275 pops off it and the batteries were still good. Eneloops seem to be a good choice and they recharge quickly and hold their charge for a long time.
