I'm still just a noob but if you go into just about every thread in this forum, you'll see plenty of guys with info at as their signatures with what they shoot with.
For weddings, the 70-200 2.8 is your friend and so are the 50mm 1.4, 85mm 2.8 and the 16-35mm

I primarily used the 24-70 f/2.8L at the last wedding I shot. I find it to be great for group shots and close-ups.

My most used lens for peoples is probably the Canon 17-55 IS 2.8. This lens just stays on one body virtually all of the time.

I actually don't use my 70-200 2.8 IS nearly as much as I thought I would, at the moment anyway. But mostly our weddings are far smaller in far smaller areas than many other shooters, so I don't need the reach either.

The 85 1.8 is great. I also love the Sigma 30 1.4 and Canon 50 1.4.

For my wide stuff the Canon 10-22 mostly. I have just picked up the Tokina 11- 16 for wide in low light but haven't had a chance to use it much yet!

See the wedding faq (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=255604) and my gear list. I use 17-55 F2.8 IS (plus my assistant uses my 2nd copy of the lens), 70-200 F2.8 IS, Sigma 30mm F1.4, and Canon 100mm F2.8 macro are what I use for lenses. I also use three speedlites, radio triggers, light stands, battery packs, and probably a few other things.

It's easy to mess up using ultrawide lenses.

Probably 80-90% of our shots are with the 17-55 2.8 IS and the 70-200 2.8 IS. On occasion, we'll use the 50 1.4 or Tokina 11-17 fisheye. The Tamron 28-75 2.8 is an excellent substitute on the less expensive side.

I can shoot an entire wedding with my 17-55 2.8 IS - and be happy with the results. I even manage to get nice ring shots with it...

You can have a whole heap of expensive lenses (one for this, one for that) - and do great - but you can also have just the one - and get to know it well! lol

The above were done with the 17-55 and are as shot - no PP.
I thought they weren't too bad...

They're great for using the 17-55 Jo :) I usually use the 100mm macro for that, but I usually take a "safe" shot with the 17-55 as well - the IS comes in really handy.

Thanks - I was quietly surprised. It really is a capable lens. I couldn't do without it.

Yes the 17-55 is quite a remarkable lens. It could definitely hold its own for an entire wedding and then some.

The 70-200/2.8 is believe it or not - my favourite portrait lens. It even banished my 85mm to the back of the bag.

I use all the lenses I own for weddings: Sigma 10-20, Tamron 28-75, Canon 85 f/1.8 and Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS. Shooting with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS, it really does give you 2-3 stops of extra usable shutter speeds, which in the first wedding I've shot with it (just tonight) has already been useful.

The two most common lenses I use are standard zoom and telephoto zoom. Primes are good for certain special situations, including the 50 f/1.4, 35 f/1.4, etc...I'd still like to have the latter. I use the Sigma 10-20 the least because it's slow, f/4-5.6.

I'm selling my Canon 24-70L once it returns from the Canon facility and selling my Canon 135L, which the 70-200 f/2.8 IS has replaced.

I use the 17-55 as well the majority of the time - occasionally i'll swap to the 10-22 if the scene calls for it, and the other half uses the 70-200 2.8 IS. Mostly its those three lenses.

I like the 17-55 but does anyone use the Tamron17-50 F2.8 ? for nearly 1/3 of the price it seems a much more efficient option

Some use the Tamron, i'm sure it's a good lens, but IS is invaluable to me.

I have tons of lenses i can use at weddings...but - i consistently use these -

24-70 2.8 for getting ready shots (sometimes also a 50mm 1.4)
24-70 & the 70-200 2.8 for the ceremony
24-70 for the group shots (or if its a huge group ill use the 16-35 2.8)
24-70 for most of the reception (but ill also use a fisheye, 50mm etc for some other creative shots...)
100mm macro for the ring shots (although ive used the 24-70 for the ring shots PLENTY of times)

so as you can see...obviously i use the 24-70 the most :)
