Actually, I'm hoping one of you can help me name this location. This was shot on a South Island hike a few years ago. But I can't for the life of me remember the name of the beach that has these interesting rock formations. Surely one of our New Zealand members can name this location?

There are huge boulders on the beach near Dunedin. I don;t remember if there are some in the water like yours, or shaped like yours, but it's possible. BTW, great shot, James.

Beautiful Scene.

The boulders mentioned are the Moeraki Boulders...
And as for the scene. Do you remember what region of South Island it was in?
Abel Tasman National Park, along the walking tracks has a few arches like that, such as

Wazza,
This is near the northwest corner of the South Island. There is a large spit of land that jutts out due north on the S. Island. The spit, as I recall, has a wildlife refuge on it. The hike where I took this shot was a few miles south of the spit along the west coast.
My maps aren't detailed enough to name this beach. I'm pretty sure it's a Maori name and it begins with a 'W'.
Anyway, I have a print of this shot on my wall. It's a great reminder of my trip to New Zealand (what a beautiful country!). But I'm sort of embarassed whenever someone asks me where the shot was taken... I have to say "somewhere in New Zealand".
Mark, No worries! Thanks for having a look anyway.

Cape Farewell is the sand spit you are talking about.

the only Maori names I can see on the map around there are Whanganui Inlet and a little settlement named Waikato (no not the River) , do those names ring any bells?
Hey look, I can help!

Nice shot, except that the water will soon all be gone as it's running downhill! ;-)

Educated guess: the photo is of the Archway Islands just south of Farewell Spit, top of the South Island, NZ. The beach referred to is probably Wharariki Beach at S 40 30.340 E 172 40.197.

GSVNoFixedAbode sounds like you got the answer down pretty acuartly!
Have you read his latest book? Iv just started on it.
Those rock arch's are actualy quite common here in NZ, large parts of the country are made from a variety of sandstones which are prone to form archways.

Nope sorry - my photography interests are strictly amateur at this point. My techo bent is more towards GPS. There was a crosspost on the geocaching forums to this thread.
BTW, if anyone is interested, here's the locale.
Cheers,
G.

Excellent. I'm planning a trip around the South Island in September. Trying to get an idea of good places to see. Now I know where this beautiful place is on the map, I may check it out. :)

My Wises map has it all, but no names, only larger towns it displays.

It looks a lot like the hole in the rock off Paihia, but I don't think it is: wrong island.

GVSNoFixedAbode! I believe that's it! Thank you! Your map is great too! I need to be in a better habit of writing place locations down.
Wazza, if you are planning to be in this vicinity then I'd definitely recommend stopping to have a look around. While there are many awesome places in your country, I found this hike to be one of my favorites. You can hike on the beach itself and/or there is a trail with wonderful views that cuts through pasture land up high(I was up high in the pasture for this photo).
PhotosGuy, oops thanks for pointing that out. Looks like it could use a little adjustment. I'll just pretend it's an exaggerated curvature of the earth for now.
Thanks to everyone for your responses. I know I must go back to New Zealand someday!
