View Full Version : Is 40D AF better than XTi?

Shooting b-ball in a dark gym with my XTi and 85/1.8, the AF has trouble especially when shooting a fast break running at me. AF can't keep up.

Would AF improve with a 40d?

Do the XTi and 40d share the same AF?

I use center point AF only.

Real world experience please, not just your best guess :)

Thanks
George

My 30d has better AF than my father's XTi, and a 40d I rented once has better AF than the 30d, so I would assume that the 40d is also better than the XTi.

I thought the XTi used the AF from the 30d?

I'd say AF is better in 40D than 30D.. I had 30D before! Not sure about XTI, but would think so.

Yes, it is. It's faster and more accurate, hunts less in low light, though with some lenses "hunting" is an idiosyncrasy regardless of the body.

I had an XTi until basketball/gymnastics season last year. By the end of the season I had a 40D and have never looked back. HUGE difference! Especially when you use lenses f2.8 or faster.

I can't remember what it was on the XTi (it is Cf 4-1-2 on the 40D), but look into using the * button to help control your AF. It takes a little getting used to, but it has been a big help to me.

The 40D can be found for a great price now (new and used)!

I would have thought so, and no contest on which is the better camera

The center point of the 40D is a cross type autofocus point. It will be better it is that simple.

I thought the center AF point on the Xti is also a cross type point. Is it the same AF point as the 40d. Sounds like it's not.

Thanks for the replies. I'll start pricing a 40d.
