What was your first L lens? My first L lens was the 70-200 f4 L and I think its the best value for dollar L lens going around. What was your first one?

My first L lense was the 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 L IS. My dad has the 70-200mm 2.8 L and both extenders so I am fortunate to be able to play with them too.

Antaine,
The 300 f4 L non IS was my third L (sounds like were talking about sexual experiences) purchased second hand last November as well. Love the sharpness of a prime lens.

The first L lens I used was a 200 mm f2.8 L a friend loaned for me to try and i'm affraid to say it was reason enough to start me off on this Bad habit (its great really)
So the first I bought was the 100 to 400 is L also picked up a 200 2.8 L often used with 1.4 extender.
and of course once you start down the route to " L " you never really want to back track and purchase non L lenses in my view.
I've just been playing with a 85 mm f1.2 L a very very nice man from Canon let me have a play with one for a while and was real impressed,
so not much point in asking whats on my shopping list.
Cheers

My first Canon L lens was the 70-200 f4 could't afford the 2.8 :(
Just ordered the 24-70 2.8, which for me is the next logical step because as soon as I used the 70-200 I realised how soft the 18-55 ef-s was and now hate it.
What interests me is why so many folk went for the 17-40 after they bought the 70-200 rather than my choice

Slightly off topic but.....
I have both the Canon 100mm Macro USM and the 100-400L IS. I've tested both at 100mm F4.5 and the 100-400L is sharper. Admittedly it doesn't go down to 2.8 and is a lot heavier which I guess is where the Macro lens really comes into its own.
They are both great lenses though :)

My first was the 100 macro (non usm) and later the 85/1.8
Not L's you say? That's because they don't NEED L designations on these razor sharp primes.
L is the title they give to lenses where they've used advanced materials and put massive effort into making them so they are allmost as good as normal primes;)

At the analogic times, borrowed in digital time !!
An exception : 28-70 F2.8 very good lens, but heavy and huge dimensions...don't use too much.
My Favorite lens is anyway the Canon 24mm F1.4: a better lens was never built.

First was the 70-200mm f/4, purchased second-hand. I loved it so much that within four months I had the 16-35mm f/2.8, 17-40mm f/4 (bought so I could choose between the two wides, and then sell one), 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8 IS (decided I needed IS), and 300mm f/4 IS.
Then last week I went to the Melbourne Grand Prix and decided the 300mm f/4 was not up to the task with a 2x converter (centre focus point only on my 1DII) so I splurged on the 300mm f/2.8 IS :) Yet to get it but looking forward big time.

I am still waiting for my finances to allow me to turn to the L side.
I am planning on getting the 70-200L IS for my first L once the finances permit.
The reasons I am choosing that particular L are:
a. It is the right range of focal lengths for the majority of the photos I take.
b. It is a sharp lens with good contrast.
c. It is a fast lens for focusing.
d. The f2.8 and IS are good for low light.
e. The weather sealing will make it easier when I shoot in dust or rain.
f. Mode 2 IS for panning will be pretty useful to me at times.

A 200 2.8L USM II which I bought 2 days ago just in time for my son's graduation. Great lens, great bokeh and sharp wide open. I came from a 75-300 IS USM(which I still have) and this 200 would be perfect if it had IS but I'm not complaining. I bought my first two at about the same time: a 20-35 f/2.8L and an 80-200 f/2.8L. I got both when the EOS-1 first came out, whenever that was--somewhere around 1989-90. I was the envy of my all-Nikon co-workers when I had the only autofocus system in the shop, save for some poor excuses for autofocus cameras that Nikon had out at that time.

Started this topic about 2 weeks ago and have had a quick look at all the posts and would have to say that it looks like the 70-200 f4 L was the most popular choice as the first L lens folowed by the 17-40 f4 L and then the 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L IS. Anyone else agree or disagree?
But the one thing we all have in common is that after you buy your first your hooked and you can’t resist in buying more!

My first L lens is a 70-200mm F4 L which I received today. This is also my first post here. Unfortunately heavy rains for the next 24 hours here in the northeast will prevent me from trying it out. My next will be the 17-40 F/4 L next month.

Canon 17-40/4L and Canon 70-200/4L. Two of the best value lenses around period, Canon or otherwise.

300 f/4 non-is, then 70-200 f/4, and looking at 17-40 f/4 vs the 16-35 f2.8
