View Full Version : How Do You Post Images & Not Lose Detail?

I'm having trouble downsizing my images without them losing a ton of detail.

I've posted a few images on various threads and they look like crap when I go back and look at them.

When I'm looking at them full rez. on my monitor, they look tack sharp and really nice, then I look at them on here after resizing and I'm embarrased.

How do you all post images that are so tack sharp without losing any detail when you resize them?

I host them on Smugmug and then embed them here. It's much easier and more effective than trying to attach images.

You just have to stay at 1024 px or smaller on the longest side.

I use photoshop 4. In photoshop do the following by clicking File "save as"

1. Change size to 1000 pixels longest end @ 200 DPI
2. Change image mode to 8bits/channel
3. Save as JPG and save with "srgb" profile
4. Save as maximum(10)
5. FILE SIZE WILL SHOW AROUND 350K ...dont get worried as it will convert to within max accepted by POTN

Try not to use "save for web" as this gives worse quality

How do I go about embedding them from Smugmug? I have a smugmug account, so this would seem like an easy task if I could figure it out.

If I cant, I'll try CLippers suggested route.

Thanks guys!

Go to your image on your smugmug page. Hit the "share" button, go down to "get a link." Select large or extra large (that should keep you under the 1024 px limit).

Come back to POTN, hit this button http://photography-on-the.net/forum/images/editor/insertimage.gif. Paste your link into it and you're set.

Don't worry about the DPI.

When you set to 1000px on the longest side it won't matter whether you set it to 1dpi or 30,000dpi. That's for setting print sizes.

When you go through a host, like photobucket or smugmug or flicker, they take care of that for you. Best way to put up a new thread with 8 images is through one of these hosts.

And don't forget getting a regular hosting account. I have been using GoDaddy for years now and for $44 a year, I can get 5Gb of storage and put anything on the site I want. I bought the domain name and everything is hosted on the GoDaddy servers. They also have free Blog software that you can install, and many other tools that you can install from the control panel for free. 5 Gigabytes of space is a llot of pictures. I've been uploading them for the forum since I joined, and don't have 2Gigs yet. :)
