Getting back into shooting, this one didn't work out as planned. Was -35 C out tonight, and these are the first lights of the year. Normally we get them every night but there's been absolutely no activity this season, and I've been watching the skies specifically all morning and night for them...

Really just wanted to see if the photo would even take with the telephoto i had on it, was testing it out for doing landscapes anyway.

In future probably try to focus more on the landscape, but that's difficult to do in itself as its so freezing cold and so dark to judge.

Specs:Taken at about 11:00pm

heated car
055D manfrotto with 484RC ballhead+quick release
canon 50D
70-200 2.8L @ 70 mm
1000 iso
2.8
4 secs
RAW

original file was about 25 mbs (eeek) i might consider shooting in jpeg again, seriously, RAW is overrated in realistic cases.

I would love to be able to see the lights just once in my life. If both the lights and the weather were accurately predictable I'd fly up some weekend. Thanks for posting.

Beautiful Kajuah.

-35C!! I think I'd have the heated car on my equipment list too. :D Still, I admire your dedication.

I can only dream of the dark skies you see there. If you get a chance could I make a request?

I'd love to see a 15+ second exposure at around 50mm toward zenith of your night sky. Doesn't have to be during -35C of course(makes my feet cold just thinking about it) but it would be great to demonstrate the difference dark skies like yours really make.

Thanks.

I did a night fishing trip in the Maldives a couple of years ago and I spent more time looking up than fishing. Absolutely incredible to have views with the naked eye that you only normally see with long exposure wide fields. If I go again I will definately be investing in an Astrotrqac.
