First wedding (5<100K)

Hi

Did my first wedding yesterday - for a friend. Was quite stressful but went ok I think and I learnt a lot from it for if I ever get asked again...!

Owing to the 'urban' setting of the wedding one of the biggest challenges was finding some relatively uncluttered backgrounds to shoot against to use. I used my new 70-200 f2.8 IS lens for a lot except the groups - have fallen in love with it. I was a bit tentative about using it too open in case I lost focus on parts of the face - especially when photoing 2 people or more together so I used it it at about 5.6 for many - think next time I would go wider to blur the background more....

Congrats! The images look good!

I use my 24-70 almost exclusively on my 5D, but when I get a chance the 70-200 2.8 IS comes out and it's a beauty. I wish I had 2 5D's to use one lens on each camera so I don't have to change so much. Get used to the f2.8 because those come out amazing.

Thanks - yes another body would be great - constant changing was a pain! The other lens I used was a 24-105 F4 IS. (oh and 100mm f2.8 macro for some detail shots. would love the 24-70 2.8 IS although having the overlap between the two I used was handy being that I only had one body....

If that is your first wedding you did an outstanding job.
The 70-200 2.8L IS, takes some getting use to. When I first stuck it on, I spent an entire weekend just shooting the h !! out of everything, that was a long time ago. I have it stuck on one 5D and the 24-105 4L IS, glued on the other (not really glued just both of those stay on and never come off) I'm use to them.
If canon ever makes the 24-70 2.8L, int to an IS I'll switch. When you start getting tired the IS comes in handy. When they get the bugs worked out of the 5DII, I may put the 24-105 on it and get a 24 prime and plant it on the 5D slipped into a pouch for those extra dark up close shots.

You did a really good job of making sure you could see everyone's eyes, great job working with fill or the available light that you had! The formals or what appears to be formals look a little "rushed" or thrown together for whatever reason, but I think you are off to a great start!

Yes - probably need some practice arranging people - any tips or places to seek some basic rules to follow?

Get a copy of better homes and gardens, or something the like on the net. The Family style mags or web sites always take extra care in arranging people. See something you like, or that grabs your eye (bingo). Same goes for any pic with people in it. Make note and add it to your bag of tricks. No one set will fit all groups but, the early BW prints from time gone by, are a solid start.
