Coles notes - 300D, have kit lens, and just picked up the 50mm 1.8. Not a professional, but I'm ok. I love photography.
I love the 50mm and the capabilities in low light, love it. Now I want a zoom.
So based on how much I love the 50mm, what would you recommend I pick up next...trying to stay under $700US or around there.
I would love something that is great in low light, good for portraits and the like, indoor shooting. Just unsure where to go from here, I have been reading lots, but wanted to post a specific question...
Thanks!

If you're looking to keep the kit lens, check out the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 Xr Di. It's well under your $700 budget. I really like mine, but the 28mm wide end is a little long at times, so I keep the kit lens and a couple of other wide primes for my wide shots. The 17-40L can be had for just under $700 as well.

If you want longer reach with that price range look at the 70-200 f4 L, if you need faster look at the sigma 70-200 2.8. Both lenses are awesome, in your price range and would only leave you with a small gap between 55mm and 70mm. later you could pick up either the sigma or canon 1.4 converter to stretch it to 280mm with very little lose in quality.

Both good suggestions, from my point of view!
You should be aware that it is a lot easier to design a prime lens with very good optical performance than a zoom lens. So if you look at Canon's lens lineup, the zoom lens to give you the performance of the 50/1.8 mm is the 24-70/2.8 L (for a mere $1200  )
