was a little bored earlier this evening and thought I might take the bike for a spin, play with my new 24-105 f4L and try some off camera lighting.

please, some solid feedback is greatly appreciated. I only have the 1 580exII to play with so bare that in mind. I struggled for some creativity with only 1 light source..

Bikes are what I shoot most of the time. They are not an easy subject to get right due to all the different shapes and angles creating shadows and reflections, as with chrome. Good lighting is so important as you have realised. I think the orange has saved your shots. Just my thinking. I use a flash during the day as a fill flash to control dark shadows but find after dark with an off the camera flash with bikes that have alot of chrome a challenge. I'am no expert in photography but happy to share my thoughts.

thanks for the comments lionel, I agree with you 100%.

I felt that, if I was to get any more reasonable shots last night than I did, I would have required more than 1 light source. the lighting the can see behind in some of the shots, were too weak to add any real highlights on the bike.

I need to find some time and try out off camera fill flash when the sun is going down. so try and use the sun as the key light and fill any darker shadows that I want..

Lionel, I'd love to see some of your shots if you can point us in the right direction, as I was saying, struggled for creativity with the lighting.

One thing I forgot to mention is this is a bare flash, would it be more effective if I was shooting through a softbox or with an umbrella? I've not used either before so would like to find out..

would it be more effective if I was shooting through a softbox or with an umbrella? You could bounce it off a wall behind you, but this will work better.

Here is something I took today. As I've haven't been a member long I don't have many posts, look in this section under Indian motorcycles, you will find some of my shots.
