This was an exabition game from last night where the USA beat Latvia 13-2. This is only my third time shooting hockey as my usual is rock concerts. But I think I could get to like this. Comments and constructive critisism welcome. There is 166 pictures in all here at my site http://www.z-photography.ca/p1039795941
In case any one is wondering, yes I was shooting with strobes, 9 to be exact all mounted up in the cat walks above. 4 on each side and one over center ice.

thanks guys. Unfortunatly I will not be shooting the actual turnament. Just these two exibition games. My buddy did not win the contract for the turnament, but the US team is using our local arena as a training camp and I shoot on behalf of the arena so we get these two games. He shoots from one end I shoot the other. We share the same strobes, as long as the puck is on my side of centre ice I can shoot and vise versa for him. Works out well for us, this is the second time we have done this and tonight is USA vs Russia which should be a good game. Not a 13-2 blow out.

I forgot to mention also that these are all through the glass. There is no cut outs.

Good shots buddy. I might not make it to the Russia game tonight. I have to say I really hate shooting through glass. K-Rock needs holes cut in the glass. Now that I shoot out of Scotiabank Place I'm spoiled.

Z, these are amazing, and you're usually shooting concerts? (searching for your concert stuff now) These are awesome dude! Doesn't it feel like a tease now? Wish you could cover more of the tourney. Did you use the 70-200 for most of these?

Thanks JayK07, they had holes cut but they made them so darn big they were afraid that someone was going to get hurt so they put the solid glass back in. Thank Justin, yes shooting concerts is my thing, but i am getting to like this hockey gig now as well. Allot less bull crap then what i have to put up with spoiled little brats that have managment companies that make ridiculass demands. Yes they were all shot with 70-200 non IS 2.8. I only have one body at the moment and changing lenses was not an option. Check out my website for my concert stuff.

Those are some solid shots for the 3rd time out. You inspire me... a 20D with a 70-200 non IS 2.8 that's about $1500 equipment (a doable budget when transitioning into a serious hobby). How did you get access to the catwalks? For me, the crash into the boards and the last goalie shot are the money ones, while you'd think by the one of the USA goalie skating away that Latvia was the one that trounced the US!

That's the same set up I'm using -- 20D with 70-200 f2.8. Sometimes I'll throw the 1.4x on if the opposing zone is defending against a powerplay. The only thing is that if there's a breakaway coming at me I'll miss it since I'm just using one body as well. If I land the job I'm aiming for I'll have a backup body and I'll throw something shorter on that. I checked your concert stuff as well -- really solid there too!!!

My buddie actually is employed as the house photog for the arena, a job that he beat me out for. At the time we didn;t know each other, but now are great friends. But I to know the general manager quite well now, this is how I get access to all the big shows as well. The strobes are all his as Hockey is his bread and butter. He is the Official Photog for Hockey Canada, in fact we packed all his lights up last night for thier journey to Edmonton today, he is flying out there to do a couple days work with the Oilers and then on Jan 5th he is on his way to Germany to shoot 5 days worth of Womens World under 18. I to am waiting on a particular paying gig that will allow me to purchase two new bodies and grips. I am leaning towards the 40D. Oh and I lied before I said we used 9 strobes it was actually 10. 8 - White Lightning 1600 and 2 - off brand that we had over centre ice. Another post with USA vs Russia coming up.
