During one of those moments when my mind drifted off track, I wondered how using "shoot" in a discussion would sound when the casual listener may not understand the context.
Just imagine the scene. Two photographers sitting on a crowded bus with an old lady evesdropping on the conversation.
1. "What did you get up to last night?"
2. "I shot the mother-in-law"
1. "How did it turn out?"
2. "I had to shoot her a couple of times to get it right"
1. "What did you use?"
2. "A Canon with a big flash"
1. "How did it look?"
2. "Terrible, her face was all distorted and my wife has now stopped speaking to me!"
1. "I know how you feel. I'm just off to pick up one of the new small Canons so I can sneak it into the house to shoot my wife when she isn't expecting it"
2. "I'm goingto a family reunion next week and I hope to shoot all my wife's family. Now I've done the mother-in-law, the rest should be easy. I keep a spare Canon in the trunk, you never know, I may need two of them".
1. "You make me jealous. I have tried to shoot my mother-in-law but she keeps ducking it. My wife said she would do it with her Canon next time she visits".
1 and 2 "Mother-in-laws, why are they so diffcult?".

:D Really Officer, it isn't really 9mm. With the 1.6 crop factor it is 14mm.
Should have used a zoom 45mm :D
The 200mm Canon is too hard to conceal.:D
Thanks KennyG

I just had to quote this from another thread:
In truth,. I hardly ever use it,. but it's nice to know it's there.
Guns don't shoot people, cameras do!

I've eliminated the words "shoot" "shot" "take" and "image" from my photographic vocabulary. And I'll never use the term "Giclee" for inkjet printing.

Whenever you succeed your shooting, be careful before leaving not to let any fingerprint on the glasses or the mirror...

It reminds me of an earlier thread:
I am going to try and shoot my daughter with some fireworks sparklers.
How should I appraoach this?

I'm in a hotel room in Las Vegas right now, and my Canon is pointed out the window. I might just shoot everyone on Las Vegas Boulevard. Last night I used my Canon to shoot an Alaska Airlines plane taking off from Las Vegas airport. I shot it through our window, and it was completely blown out.

I had to laugh at this one Kenny, I can just imagine this scenario actually taking place. :) :)
Another one:
"Actually, I'm thinking about upgradng my Canon. Rapid fire on my one is a little slow and I keep missing".

A guy ask for my name and address after overhearing a discussion I was having with a fellow birder regarding a mating pair of Golden Eagles I had shot the day before. He said he was going to turn me into Fish and game.

I use the word shoot a lot. I don't find there is any other real alternative, and I think it sounds pretty professional. Whats the alternative? Hey, I'm gonna go take some pictures?

My wife works in TV and on more than one occasion, as she mentioned an upcoming "shoot" in public, I've noticed bystanders look askance at us.

I kinda watch what terminology I use around certain people for sure. The English language is a weird one.

Shoot! I done missed a shot of that guy shootin' birds!
We could start a trend by using "pix" as a verb, meaning "to capture a pixel image," but people would then think we were all pixilated.
Then again, if "shoot" meant "shoot," a 300mm would really be a cannon! Poor birdy! And one of Jon's horses wouldn't do so well, either!

I got a lot of comments about my "shooting" eagles in Alaska. Apparently many people thought the wording was very funny. I dunno, it sounds perfectly normal to me. After all, there's more than one way to shoot a bird!
