I know this is not related to photography, well sort of. I was looking for back up options for my network and through reading around here i found windows home server. I have installed it and it is a great system. I am having a pain in the but time finding help on it though. I figured I would ask around here.

Are there any network experts here. Who has used Windows home server or remote desktop settings at all.

I have the server up and running but my router seems to block my access from outside the firewall (router) for me to log into the windows home server console. I can log into my website and get into the secure part of that. but i can not log into the console part. I get time out errors when i try to log into console or log into one of my machines form out side my house.

If i am inside the house (inside the firewall) then i can log into the computers and console no problem. Please help if you know what to look for. I know there is port forwarding but i can't get it to work right.

google ftw...

Looks like you need to forward port 3389 on the router, to your server's IP address.

You realize if you can remote desktop your home server from outside your house, that others will also be able to hack it? I would not enable this port on the firewall unless you are confident you have hardened the server well and understand the ramifications of what you are doing.

You need to use VPN to connect to your home network from outside then connect to the server.

Use a VPN provided your router supports it. It requires a little more than just basic user knowledgeto set up. Once you open your network up to the outside world, the outside world can and will try to get past your firewall.
