View Full Version : 3rd Party 40D Batteries: Worth it or Not?

I'm going to get a spare battery for my 40D tomorrow. What I'm wondering is whether its worth it to get a cheaper 3rd party battery rather than Canon's own BP-511A? And if you think it is worth it, can you recommend a particular battery?

Thanks,
Henry

I use a few of those and it's not a problem to me... some are even more powerful and reliable too.

If you can wait a few days, SterlingTek is a great way to go. Alot of people here have had great success with them (myself included). Just do a search, and you'll find a wealth of information on SterlingTek.

Why do I need to wait a few days, Bryan?

Because you have to order them at www.sterlingtek.com

They usually ship the next business day, but since you had mentioned picking up a spare battery tomorrow, I was unsure if you needed one now or if you could wait a few days.

They really are a great deal!

They're an incredibly valuable (and underutilized) resource here.

Another vote for Sterlingtek. I only used Sterlingteks on my old XTi, and now have two for my 40D. Never had a problem with them and they hold a charge longer than the Canon ones.

I think original is the best

I found the Sterlingteck ones to have up to 50%+ longer charge then the Canon.

^+1. They're also much cheaper.

I agree, bought a twin pack from 7dayshop.com and these last 1,500 shots plus on my 40D...cost 10.99 GBP, a bargain!

One question I've not seen is; will Canons OEM charger charge these Sterlingtek 511's?

Also since the 511 and 511a are the exact same thing at sterlingteks site, and the only difference between the 511 and 511a are mAh ratings, It doesn't matter which I buy, right?

Yep, and the other way around (Canon batteries in Sterlingtek charger). For that matter, having a second charger is a good thing, since they can die. Plus Sterlingtek's charger comes with an auto adapter and doubles as a flashlight.

And I even use my Canon BP-511 in my 20D/5D. They run just the same; all mAh reflects is how long they last in use. So don't worry about which.

I have 4 of these. Would not know they were not OEM yet.
