I am researching buying a new monitor in the next few weeks. I have a 19inch CRT which has been very true to color. I also play some of the new games on the market as well.
I am also looking into a calibrator. I have looked at Spyder 3 but didn't realize it was so epensnsive. Are there any alternatives that are effective but a little less expensve?

The Spyder2Express is just $69 at Amazon - just for 1 monitor though, but it's cheap and it gets the job done.

I use Spyder2Pro on all my computers (it does not call home so I can install it on all my computers, calibrate then remove the device and take it home). Here's the breakdown... Spyder2Express or Spyder3 Suite ($69 each) will only calibrate one monitor per machine. The Spyder2Pro, Spyder3 Pro or Spyder 3 Elite all will calibrate multiple monitors on the 'same' computer. These programs are more expensive but also more sensitive than the Express or Suite (albeit likely that it is software improvments since the sensor is the same sensor in the Express ver).
The Express and Suite are very simple to use, only asking you some basic information before calibrating your monitor for you. The Pro versions will ask about three times more questions and ask you to set your RGB to atain 6500K before doing its thing. It can take a while to get the RGB right.

Does only the Spyder Pro 2 not phone home? or which other ones dont phone home? I can only speak to Spyder2PRO - it does not phone home so you have unlimited installs - just move the sensor to each computer, calibrate, disconnect and move to the next computer.
