i recently bought a lens hood online for my 28-70mm f3.5-4.5 II lens, the required lens hood is the ew 68a, but the one i got from mail was a ew-68b, i think the only difference is that the ew 68b is a bit longer, its was designed for a 35-105mm lens. i was just wondering if this is going to affect my photos? i guess coz im using a d30 and this lens behaves like a 44-112mm if wont have a any problems. how do you check if a lens hood affects your photos? i heard that if its the wrong one you'll likely to get dark corners.

Try the lens with the hood on at maximum and minimum zoom. If it has dark corners, ask them to send you the right one.

I highly doubt your D30 (APS sized sensor) will have an issue with the longer hood.

I put the lens hood from my 70-200 f2.8 on my 16-35 f2.8 once to see what would happen. It did vignette when I got it down around 22mm. Other than that it was fine on the 10D, which should indicate how good a lens hood "made" for a specific focal length actually is. If anything you will get better effectiveness with the "wrong" hood in this case.
