View Full Version : Sync Issues With Off-cam Flash On 5D...But Not 40D

Hi all. I'm having a sync issue with my flashes and the cheap "poverty" wizards. If I sync at 1/200 on the 5D, I will get a slight curtain shadow. The weird thing is, when I had my 40D, I had no issues when syncing at the max shutter speed of 1/250. Can someone explain why it produces a curtain shadow on the 5D, but not the 40D? Thanks.

I'll await a response too! I just took delivery of 2 x 400ws stobes with brollies and as I tried them out doing a self portrait using my new 5D MkII I started to get a bottom black band, as I increased speed the black band grew in size from the bottom.
No I don't see many circumstances to use such a fast speed with stobes, but I am interested to know why, my lights are rated for a duration 1/700s - 1/1200s.
I also found that I can fire the stobes using Canon's ST-E2 but it is not always succesfull.

The 5D has a bigger mirror? 1/160 is what I got out my 5D with the eBay trigger. With a fresh set of batteries, I can get 1/200, but not 100%. I use 1/125 most of the time anyway.

The 5D mirror moves much slower than the 40D.

It's not the mirror moving slower that's causing the problem but the shutter curtains on the 5D moving slower that's causing the issue. Remember, the mirror has to be up and out of the way already before the curtains can start to open so how long it takes for the mirror to get up there doesn't really matter as far as syncing in concerned. :)
