I dont know if anyone asked about this, but i cant seem to get anything right when i use the flash on my camera(300D). Exposure becomes all messed up,white balance the same  . It's not that i don't get correctly exposed images is just that when i shoot on manual i ussually underexpose at least 1 stop from the camera reading and still the picture looks ok?whos that? doesnt the camera take into consideration that the flash is open when it measures the light, i dont understand!
Also, sometimes when i shot lets say at 1/50 with flash the image looked more underexposed than at 1/200  ! In other situations i shot the same scene with the same settings(flash opened of course) and "sunny day" WB preset, but when i switched to "flash" WB the highlights were all burnt and greatly overexposed! :-|

On manual, the camera will adjust the power of the flash to compensate for whatever settings you are shooting. On Av/Tv modes, the camera will meter for existing light, and just use the flash to fill the foreground subject.

Read this great flash sticky that Scott put together. I use it all the time when I have a flash question:
