Just got it, threw it on my NEW 40d (woo!) and tried to figure out how it works.
Now its stuck to where it doesnt report my lens length, or the little [x] type icon to the right saying its compatible.

How do I get it back to normal? Currently it looks exactly like:
ETTL Zoom --mm

Hmm, I messed with exposure compensation or something and the icon is back and it adjusts the mm value to my lens.

How did I do that?

Sounds like you pointed the head of the flash somewhere other than forward. If you point it straight forward it should zoom with the lens.

In the 55 minutes since you posted and I am typing this, I assume you read the manual, right?

40Dude: No, I would never read a manual. They contain nothing but useful information to me.
Yes I read it, it didnt specify anything of getting the "m" to go away or how to go into the "zoom" mode.

It appears Titus was correct though. Thankyou very much! How frustrating.

Right! Better upgrade to the 580EXII. At least the 580 manual tells you what manual zoom is and how to get out of manual zoom mode so that the flash unit reacts to the focal length of the lens.

Perfect! Thats what Ill tell the 'rents.Your word has inspired us all.

I just couldnt figure out the pointing it around thing. Sat there for like an hour simply pushing buttons and reading the "mode" section of the manual. It told you how to get in or how to get it to show up, and it told you what the icon was but I couldnt figure out how to get back.

i think i have the same problem, i accidentally hit the * button, and the camera flash, and then NOW my flash is not working well, out of sync.... please remeber what you did! thanks

On the 40D with a 580EXII, I can control the flash using the camera menu options. In there are ways to reset and clear settings for the flash.

it fire flash but the image is underexposed, it's like silhouette, until now i can't figure it-out.. thanks
